Paul Finebaum assesses Gamecocks, fan hatred for Clemson

July 01, 2019

Like most national analysts pontificating on South Carolina's expected challenges during the 2019 season, ESPN's Paul Finebaum is holding on to what little stock he has left in Will Muschamp.

Facing a schedule loaded with elite competition, the Gamecocks won't get a sense of finality for Muschamp's future and the program's trajectory until after the approaching campaign, Finebaum says.

"I think they should (be better),” Finebaum said during Monday's appearance on WJOX-FM's The Roundtable. "I look at a couple games last year, the first being Georgia. Expectations were through the roof in Columbia that day, Gamecock fans talking trash then they got ran over. And (then) they just laid such an egg in the bowl game and I know Virginia is pretty good, expected to win what ever stupid division that will get massacred by Clemson in the ACC Championship Game, but there’s no excuse for being shutout 28-0 in a game an hour and a half from your campus. I read the article.

Finebaum makes a lot of stupid statements in it, and draws wrong conclusions.

But then that's typical Finebaum when it comes to a serious analysis of an East team not named Georgia or Florida.

Pawl understands more than most want to admit about us and other SEC programs. There is no question our season could go bad really quick if we were to lose to a unc or App. Stayut. With us playing the top 3 teams in the nation plus TAMU and Flawda, we have no room for error in games we should win or even 50/50 games. We will have to be ready to play well every weekend to get to 7 wins.
