We have good coaches. So why can't our players play cleaner?

Troy: 2 penalties for 16 yards

USC: 10 penalties for 93 yards

IIRC, this now brings the season total to 39 penalties for USC vs 21 for the opposition. Almost 2/1.

And the penalties come at the worst time.  Not that there is a good time, but these are drive killers or extenders.  Something has to be done to limit these mistakes.  I really thought this staff would have these penalties cleaned up by now.  Seems like it's getting worse, not better.

I thought we would be a better coached team than this.  I know it's early and the staff is new, etc, but it has to get better or we are going to struggle in games.

Holding and a personal foul are the ones that kill me.  Taunting a player when you make a good play?  Holding when you're already beat?  Hands to the face?

I see the stupid penalties, especially the taunting, showboating, etc., as a byproduct of what the team has been learning during Muschamp's tenure.  They have done that for the last several years, and despite the other teaching, training, and coaching they have had with the new staff, it still comes out at gametime.  It will take a while to overcome this.  I think it will only happen when there are no more Muschamp recruits on the team.

The ones from playing aggressive and emotional I can almost understand but the procedural ones are annoying.  They all hurt the team tho and should be cleaned up in a hurry.

I have thought for a while that we have too many players who are strong enough, but not smart enough to play like they should.  Meaning not knowing what's going on in a game, retaining what they're trained on, and letting their egos get the best of them.

It goes back to what that Gator fan said on CT after we first hired Muschamp that we had no idea how bad he was going to wreck our program.

I believe Shane and his staff realize the players' limitations, but are working to coach them the best they can.  It would be a struggle even without forcing them to learn a new playbook and system.

Shane will bring in enough players who are both strong and smart enough to play well to anchor the team on both sides of the ball.  I believe they will correctly point out what the current players are doing wrong rather than give up, which is what I believe eventually happened with enough of Muschamp's staff to send the train off the tracks.

I just believe this staff is better than Muschamp's and will get the lights to come on with enough players during the season for us to have a decent winning season.

I see another 4th down pass go through a WR's hands and onto the turf and I might start throwing stuff. Off topic in this thread but fall sunder the heading of "things that drive me $#@& nuts."

It's actually the same thing, if you stop and think about it.  LOL

Seems like we could eliminate a couple of penalties with team rules/policies:

How to eliminate the tossed ball before the endzone? Anyone scoring a touchdown holds onto the ball until he hands it to the ref in the back of the endzone, Marcus Lattimore style.  No exceptions.

How to eliminate taunting penalties?  Obviously we are not mentally disciplined enough to allow any personal discernment, so new team policy is no talking to the other team period. You stand over an opponent, you're benched.  Instead, if you wreck an opponent with a great play, you help him up...and then knock his ass down again next play.  And you say nothing.  You want to get in their heads, smile at them, and then knock their ass down.

Now I don't expect any of the above to be adopted, but at some point you have to question the methods you're currently doing if they are not correcting the problem.

I like it!
