DE Brad Johnson 6'3" 225lbs of Pendleton is the third major prospect Paul Sutherland has had the good fortune to coach in the last few years. Michael Hill is a starting defensive tackle at Ohio State and speedy athlete Malik Grate is headed to Wake Forest in the fall. Now he has Johnson who has burst on the scene as one of the state’s best for 2017.
“He has a great upside,” Sutherland said. “He’s 16 years old and won’t be 17 until the middle of August. He won the state triple jump last year and has high jumped six feet-four inches.”
Thursday Sutherland will take Johnson to Georgia Tech for an unofficial visit and he’s going to NC State February 27th. He was at USC’s junior day last weekend and came away with a favorable impression.
“He had a great time, he and his mom loved it,” Sutherland said. “He was very impressed with Muschamp and really impressed with their Buck position.
Johnson has offers from USC, Wake Forest, Duke, Colorado State and Miami of Ohio. Clemson is also showing interest but has not yet offered.
“Coach Venables has come by and likes him but has told him to be patient,” Sutherland said adding Johnson wants to make his decision before his senior season.
Last season Johnson had 17 sacks.
