The players now opting out not to  play in an bowl hurts college sports the only way to keep these guys playing is to pay them the bowls have to come up with an way to pay these guys now.  Most of the bowls are meaningless to an lot of these guys.  if they were to get paid by the bowls it might just help keep them until afterwards.

Sadly all about money and you have to protect yourself from injuries' that can cost you millions this is understandable considering the money out there these days. But I still enjoy all the bowl games just enjoy the college game and the young men that will not be playing in the pros which is most players only a few each year get drafted and others try other ways, so education still important.

Unfortunately injuries to players like Jaylon Smith that were high profile and sure fire first round picks has put that thought into many players heads.  I can’t say that I blame them nor do I agree with the “not finishing what they started” narrative.  For players that have nothing to gain and everything to loose why would you risk millions.

it's just a matter of integrity  seems like the whole U.S. lacks that today. No saying it's right but that's all I could think of right now

Integrity really seems like the wrong word here. If a guy up and quit 5 games into the season that’s one thing.  To question a kids integrity when they literally have nothing to gain and everything to loose is questionable.  Let’s face the facts though this bowl is 10x bigger to the fans than most players.  Theirs no national spotlight and it’s not the playoffs.  Facts are first round draft picks make anywhere between 15-70 million dollars between contracts and signing bonuses.  15 million is life changing money and all it takes is 1 play for that 15 to go to 0.

IT'S  Really hard for me on this issue I agree to some of what is being said but then why don't players have to pay back that Scholarship money when they OPT out.

Just saying the rules are one way always have been then if you opt out when you get you're monies pay that back 3 years or whatever back to the University.

Marcus is the guy who I get it from he really would have been good in the pro's but he didn't do it in an bowl game. So it could happen at anytime.

I’m really not trying to play devils advocate here, I actually had this same conversation with a fan of another team because one of theirs opted out of a bowl.  But here’s a few things to actually consider when saying kids should pay that back.

1) SC made in the neighborhood of 30 million dollars this year off of football, not counting bowls and things.  This is after expenses.

2) when a school gives any kid a scholarship what are they actually loosing?  They aren’t paying the professors more to be there.  I’d be willing to bet they throw away more food than they feed these kids.  They have already budgeted money for on campus housing weather it’s used for athletes or not.  So realistically their giving away a few books and some school merchandise for them to wear. I would think those numbers were all figured into football expenses that left the 30 million dollar profit.

3) schools can’t pay the players (legally) so endorsement NIL deals are their only way of earning money.  The best players probably don’t have time for a job, if any of them do.

4) most of the big time players at every school end up being a booster in some capacity one they have moved to the next level.

So with all that in mind we would ask these kids to pay back between 40 and 100k according to what degree their choosing.  Some may cost more.  With 85 scholarship players on the roster and 12 games each kid makes the university an average of$329,411.77 per year, including the scholarship players that don’t see the field.  That’s a long winded way of saying they have already paid that scholarship back several times over by the time they suit up for 3 seasons.

Move the college awards to January and after bowl season.

For us it’s a game and we are fans .. for them it’s a potential career and a freedom from what is very often very very humble surroundings. Our ideas about right and wrong and loyalty aren’t applicable.

As a fan it stinks when a big contributor opts out but I don't have a problem with it. I used to take a selfish approach and label them as quitting on their team. I have learned to respect their decision to want to protect their potential future in the NFL and make as much money as possible in the short time they may have playing pro. I appreciate their time here and understand their reasons for moving on. Thanks for being a gamecock, go get paid for the work you've put in.

I think in general the CFPs have marginalized all other bowl games and by association the sports media types that cover them. The conference/division championship games seem to be the only other postseason games that matter to a lot of fans.

However, Shane has been one of the few sparks this season past the bowl games and I believe the media folks will gravitate to Shane and our program if we continue to improve.  I think Shane will end up doing a lot better with recruits than we are expecting in February if we do okay in our bowl game.
