A quick rundown of the Wofford Terriers position by position as they get ready to face the South Carolina Gamecocks this weekend at Williams-Brice Stadium.
Offense
Quarterback:
The Terriers are more known for their option-style offense therefore the quarterbacks have received little work in the passing game this season. There has been a total of 72 passes thrown all season long by Wofford.
The leading quarterback is Brian Kass. In 10 games this season, he’s 18-of-42 for 345 yards with six touchdowns passing and two interceptions. Kass has also rushed for 266 yards with five touchdowns on 99 attempts. James Lawson is behind him with 82 yards passing this season, including last week’s start against Chattanooga where he was 4-of-5 passing and ran for 31 yards. He’s only rushed for 46 yards this season and has one rushing touchdown.
Running Back:
This is where the Wofford Terriers have their star on offense. Fullback Eric Breitenstein is the leading rusher for Wofford this year with 1528 yards on 216 attempts for a 7.1 yard average per carry. He has a total of 15 touchdowns this year in 10 games played. Breitenstein set the school-record for career rushing yards during last week’s win against Chattanooga. The next closest rusher in yards to Breitenstein is Donovan Johnson. Johnson has 340 yards on 38 attempts for an average of 8.9 yards per carry. He has three rushing touchdowns on the season.
Offensive Line:
The offensive line has helped Wofford build the second leading team in rushing yards per game at the FCS level. Currently, the Terriers average 357.10 yards per game on the ground. There are three senior starters for Wofford on the offensive line – LT Calvin Cantrell, RG T.J. White and RT Jake Miles. The other two starters are juniors in LG Tymeco Gregory and C Jared Singleton. Gregory, Singleton, White and Miles have started every game this year for the Terriers. Cantrell has started seven of the 10 games at left tackle for Wofford.
Wide Receivers/Tight Ends:
Wofford’s option offense doesn’t lead to many opportunities for its receivers and tight ends in this offense. The two main threats for the Terriers through the air are WR Jeff Ashley and TE Michael Harpe. Ashley leads the team in receptions, yards and average yards per game. He currently has 13 receptions for 193 yards and two touchdowns. TE Michael Harpe is the team’s leader in touchdown receptions with three touchdowns in four games played. He’s also the team’s second leading receiver in yards with 69 yards this season.
Defense
Defensive Line:
The Terriers run a base 3-4 defense with Josh Roseborough and Tarek Odeom as the defensive ends and E.J. Speller as the nose tackle. Roseborough is the leading tackler of the three with 25 total tackles. He also has 6.0 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, six quarterback hurries and one forced fumble. Speller is next with 22 total tackles with 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack on the season. Odom has 17 total tackles but is second on the team in sacks with 3.0 this year.
Linebackers:
The four starting linebackers for Wofford are Travis Thomas, Mike Niam, Mike McCrimon and Alvin Scioneaux. McCrimon, Scioneaux and Niam are three of the four top tackles on the team for Wofford. McCrimon leads the way with 56 total tackles for Wofford and is also the team’s leader in interceptions with two. Scioneaux is the team’s leader in tackles for loss with 7.5 and in sacks with 4.0 this year. Thomas has added 32 tackles this year for the Terriers.
Cornerbacks:
The two starting cornerbacks for Wofford are seniors Blake Wylie and Stephon Shelton. Shelton is the leading tackler between the two with 40 total tackles this year but Wylie is right behind him with 38. Wylie is tied with McCrimon for the team lead in interceptions with two. Shelton has recovered two fumbles this year and also has a blocked kick as well.
Safety:
Wofford has two more experienced players at the safety position with senior Kendall Bratcher at strong safety and junior James Zotto at free safety. Zotto has 53 total tackles this season along with three pass breakups. Bratcher has 23 total tackles this year and one forced fumble. Backup Josh Holt has 25 total tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss.
Special Teams:
Junior Kasey Redfern currently handles all three kick duties for Wofford. As the field goal kicker, he is 4-of-6 on field goal attempts with a long of 53 yards. He’s averaging 39.8 yards per punt on 39 attempts this year. On kickoffs, he has 27 touchbacks on 61 attempts with an average of 61.9 yards per kickoff. Brad Nocek is the starting punt returner and teams up with Cam Flowers on kickoff return duties. Nocek is averaging 4.5 yards on eight attempts this year on punt returns while he has 72 yards on four attempts on kickoff returns
