Pressing questions about South Carolina recruiting for National Signing Day
Jan. 30, 2017
What’s going on beforehand?
Late January tends to be one of the busiest recruiting times of the year, and at South Carolina this is no exception. Up first on the docket is 4-star defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw, who is scheduled to announce his commitment to the Gamecocks on Tuesday, via Twitter.
The one-time commitment is coming off his official visit this past weekend. Southern Cal hosted him earlier this month.
South Carolina is expected to regain Kinlaw, who was placed by Muschamp’s staff at Jones County Junior College in January of 2016.
Can they hang on?
That’s been the million-dollar question since Jamyest Williams committed to South Carolina last August.
Muschamp’s staff got the last crack at entertaining Williams this past weekend, when he was on campus for his official visit. After spending the previous weekend in Athens, Georgia seized the momentum.
Now, according to Williams’ father, it’s 50-50 between South Carolina and Georgia.
Williams, a 4-star cornerback from Loganville, Ga., will make his final announcement on signing day at Grayson High School.
Will they address the needs?
With 4-star defensive end M.J. Webb already enrolled and 3-star DE Tyreek Johnson set to grayshirt, South Carolina has formed a little bit of a foundation for the future of its defensive line. Now, it’s a matter of waiting to see what else can be added on top, and there are plenty of possibilities.
Assuming Kinlaw re-commits — we are — the attention then shifts to 4-star end Brad Johnson (Pendleton, S.C.), 3-star end Aaron Sterling (Tucker, Ga.) and 4-star tackle Devonte Wyatt (Decatur, Ga.).
Virginia Tech and Tennessee are the respective challengers for Johnson and Sterling. Wyatt, a former South Carolina commitment who’s now on board in Georgia’s class, is also considering Florida.
All are set to announce on signing day.
Will there be any surprises?
Georgia defensive end commitment Robert Beal wasn’t listed above for the simple reason that we find it hard to believe he’ll flip to South Carolina.
If that were to happen, it will be quite the coup for Muschamp. Along those same lines, it would come as a bit of a surprise if Williams sticks with his commitment and signs with South Carolina.
Both, however, did take official visits to South Carolina this weekend.
It’s going to be a lot of fun to see what kind of tricks Muschamp might have up his sleeve on Wednesday.
