Pro-style quarterback checks out the Gamecocks

USC has one quarterback committed for the 2020 class in Luke Doty of Myrtle Beach. He’s a dual-threat quarterback who is dangerous with his legs and his arm. Saturday a more traditional pro-style quarterback, Elijah Gainey (6-3 218) from Flowery Branch, GA visited for the spring game. If nothing else, the fact he comes from the school that sent Connor Shaw to USC should work in his favor with the Gamecocks. Gainey said he was blown away by his experience on Saturday.
“The facilities were by far some of the best in the country,” Gainey said. “The coaches are all genuine, especially Coach (Dan) Werner. He’s a great coach and awesome person. Had a great conversation with him today. Me and him talked about how things were going at school, how my team is going to look next year, how I’m training and all that. Really just a good conversation. They want me to come back up in June to throw for them so that’s the plan.”
Working out for a school at its summer camp can open the door to an offer, if the workout is good enough. Gainey, who has not yet landed an offer, hopes to take advantage of that shot with the Gamecocks to show Werner and Will Muschamp he can win for them in the SEC.
“If I throw like I know I can when I go up there, then I don’t see any reason why they wouldn’t, besides already having Doty committed,” Gainey said.
Gainey also is hearing from Boston College, Georgia Tech, Harvard, Yale and Troy. Last season he passed for 2005 yards and 20 touchdowns in just 8 games. He missed some time with a concussion.
