G.A. Mangus was already showing strong interest in class of 2015 four-star quarterback Brandon Wimbush (Jersey City, N.J./St. Peters Prep), and Wednesday the Gamecocks' quarterbacks coach took his recruitment of Wimbush to another level when he offered the 6-foot-2, 205-pounder.

"I was actually very excited," Wimbush said of the offer. "Coach Mangus came in [to the school today] and offered. I was very excited. I didn't believe it at first, but then I was like, it's real, it's happening. Coach Mangus used to come by during the season and watched practice and he said he liked what they saw. They were showing interest before and then he came in and offered."

The Top247 quarterback who is ranked the No. 7 quarterback in his class in the industry-generated 247Sports Composite, hasn't visited South Carolina yet, but does already know certain things about the program.

"It's down south, so it's closer to my family (in south Florida). It's a great school and football program," Wimbush said. "You can't beat Steve Spurrier -- you can't beat that as a head coach. He's one of the best. He won the Heisman. He knows what he's talking about with quarterbacks. So to be approved by him is a big deal for me. And then the attention they bring there every year. To be a top five team and in the SEC is a big deal."

Wimbush, who carries a rating of 0.9248 as a four-star in the 247Sports Composite, went into more detail about his interest in Spurrier.

"Just that he builds the offense around the quarterback," the state of New Jersey's No. 4 prospect said. "(Connor) Shaw did a heck of a job this year. He was the leader of the offense and the leader of the team. They have playmakers all over the field and that makes it easier for the quarterback and as a quarterback you want to be able to make the other players around you better, which their quarterback did."

Wimbush lists Miami, Penn State, Ohio State, Boston College and Rutgers as the schools that are recruiting him the hardest

Do the Gamecocks have a chance to land him?

"I'd say definitely. I'm still exploring. I'm still open minded. The schools that I get to visit [have a chance] and like I said, Coach Mangus is a good guy, so I liked his personality and how we got along, so that really helps. And I like the school and football program, so they definitely have a chance."
