QB hopes to get Gamecocks’ attention in June

Looking to impress
Ryan Campbell can’t wait to get in front of South Carolina quarterbacks coach Dan Werner. The 2020 quarterback from Laurens (S.C.) High School will throw in front of the Gamecocks’ first-year assistant coach at some point next month, during the third annual Muschamp Camp run.
June will be a busy month for Campbell, who said he also plans to attend camps at Mercer (June 1), East Carolina (June 24), Duke and Appalachian State.
“I just want them to see that I can play ball,” Campbell said. “I’m more like a dual-threat. I just want them to see that I bring a lot with my game.”
He added, “I’m very coachable, strong arm, accurate, leader, a team player. I’m very vocal.”
The 5-foot-11, 180-pound prospect camped at South Carolina and Georgia State last summer. In February, he visited Georgia Tech and Georgia State.
As Campbell moves through the recruiting process and starts to add offers, he plans to keep an “open mind,” he said.
“Obviously, I have some dream schools,” Campbell said. “But I’m trying to keep an open mind and whatever school feels like home and has what I want to major in.”
Growing up, South Carolina was his team, but Campbell won’t let that be a deciding factor if the Gamecocks offer at some point down the road. But he certainly would like to join one of his former teammates in Columbia. Former 3-star recruit Summie Carlay is a redshirt freshman offensive lineman for the Gamecocks.
“I actually talked to him last weekend. He was down here in Laurens,” Campbell said. “He’s loving it up there.”
First to offer
On Wednesday night, Purdue pulled the trigger on an offer for 2020 wide receiver Jalen Coit, a 6-foot-1, 160-pound prospect from Cheraw (S.C.) High School.
Like Campbell, Coit will attend Mercer’s Super Elite Camp on Friday. Several Power 5 schools will have coaches in attendance, including Arkansas, Duke, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Iowa, Oklahoma, Michigan, Syracuse and Vanderbilt.
Before June is over, Coit could have offers from Arkansas and Duke. South Carolina’s coaches will have an up-close look at him during one of the two on-campus 7-on-7 tournaments, which are set for June 14 and 15.
The Gamecocks already have offered Coit’s classmate at Cheraw, 4-star defensive tackle Xavier McIver.
South Carolina recruiting roundup
Four-star athlete Keveon Mullins (Memphis, Tenn.) recently pulled the plug and ended his commitment to Memphis. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound 2019 prospect from Whitehaven High School told Rivals that he plans to take an official visit to South Carolina.
Four-star defensive end Curtis Fann Jr. is taking his first official visit this weekend. Louisville is hosting the 2019 prospect from Emanuel County Institute in Twin City, Ga. According to the 247Sports composite, he’s ranked as the No. 17 weakside defensive end in the country.
Four-star small forward Christian Brown is taking an official visit to UNLV, according to The State’s Lou Bezjak. Brown, who’s ranked as the No. 25 overall prospect in the Class of 2019, is the No. 2-ranked in-state basketball player. Brown (6-6, 205) attends Lower Richland High School, which is about 30 minutes from Colonial Life Arena.
