With one week remaining to straighten out his offense before the annual spring game, coach Steve Spurrier is seeing incremental progress from his passing game.
“Connor (Shaw) has been doing OK,” Spurrier said Thursday after South Carolina’s 12th practice of the spring. “We have just been playing a lot of guys and it hasn’t been real pretty, but that’s OK. We will try to get better this week and put on a good spring game.”
“I think our passing game is getting a little better,” said Shaw, the returning starter at quarterback. “We don’t have everybody out here on the offensive line. We expect to get the passing game going.”
Offensive line instability has been one issue. Senior center T.J. Johnson missed two weeks due to a sprained foot, although he returned Tuesday. Starting guard A.J. Cann is sidelined by a leg injury, and starting tackle Mike Matulis has missed all spring after having shoulder surgery.
“We expect them to be a lot better come September,” Spurrier said.
Shaw has performed well this spring, quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus said.
“His comfort level is really, really good right now,” Mangus said. “He’s very comfortable in his own skin. Now we are just going to work the kinks out and have a great season.”
The backup quarterback job won’t be decided until the fall, Mangus said. Seth Strickland, Dylan Thompson, Andrew Clifford and Tanner McEvoy all are competing for the job.
