Ranking QB Ryan Hilinski’s debut among other Gamecock QB's in recent history

Sept. 07, 2019

Freshman QB Ryan Hilinsk didn’t disappoint in the win as he threw for 282 yards and had three total touchdowns in the 72-10 win over Charleston Southern. (VIEW ARTICLE)

Strictly speaking, Nunez, BMac, and Orth all won their first games because they were against non-conference opponents by design.

But none of them have had it all together in their first game like Ryan did today.  They gradually went downhill over a 3-game span and then Jake came in one year early and did his thing.

I think it will still be a learning process for him, but he will get it together faster and better than the ones before him.

I'm trying not to get too excited by today's game.  However, I am very excited about how Hilinski handled the game.  I have never seen a Gamecock QB seemingly "get it" this quickly.

That quick release of his will get us a lot of first downs and will prevent Bama and others from camping out waiting to pounce for a pick-6 on those short passes.

80% completion % / Passer rating of 174.3?  First start? That's almost stupid good even if it was CSU.

So what happened to all those "drops"?

Will seemed a lot more confident in his PG presser than the ones before.

Yeah, we won, but I think it was more along the lines of, "See, I DO know what I'm doin'."

I haven't watched it yet.  I will make sure I do.

I hope this is the beginning of what we have been waiting for.  I desperately want the Gamecocks to become a major force in college football, but I also want to see Muschamp do well as our coach.  I genuinely like him.
