Recapping another busy weekend in Columbia

March 25, 2018

Virginia OL likes South Carolina

Jakai Moore, the No. 23-ranked guard in the Class of 2019, was supposed to visit South Carolina this weekend, but he was unable to make it down from Nokesville, Va.

His official visit, which is set for April 27, is still on as scheduled.

“I have friends who graduate this year who are going down to South Carolina. That, straight off the bat, tells me a lot about how South Carolina is. … Coming from Virginia, all the way down to South Carolina, there just has to be something about the school,” Moore said.

The upcoming trip, which will be his first to South Carolina, will provide Moore with an opportunity to spend more time with offensive line coach Eric Wolford, who already has commitments from three 2019 offensive linemen.View attachment 442

“Honestly, he’s just been keeping it real with me,” Moore said. “He’s been telling me I can be what I want to become, if I come and train with him. … He just shows me videos of what they work on in practice constantly and keeps sending them to me, keeps me updated on how he can help me eventually get to the NFL.”

So far this year, Moore has visited Penn State, Virginia and Virginia Tech. Ohio State and Maryland are scheduled to host him before the end of the month.

The 6-foot-6, 293-pound prospect hopes to make a decision by November.

“I’m not in too big of a rush to make my decision, because I want to make the right decision,” Moore said.

Class of 2019 weekend guests

Several top recruits did make it to Columbia on Saturday, including 4-star quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, who was at The Opening in Atlanta on Sunday.

Four-star defensive tackle Ben Smiley from Chesapeake, Va., appeared to enjoy his trip, according to a few posts on Twitter.

Five-star cornerback Chris Steele, the No. 29 overall prospect nationally, also participated in the obligatory jersey photo shoot on Saturday.

Junior college defensive tackle Jahkeem Green, whose commitment was first reported by SEC Country, told SportsTalk SC’s Phil Kornblut on Saturday that South Carolina “felt like home.”

“It was a great environment, the people around me and the coaches, and they made me feel like I need to be there. They like that I’m big, strong and athletic,” Green said.

For now, his only other offer is Louisiana-Lafayette.

Don’t let the lack of offers fool you. Dude can play. Just check out a few senior highlights from when he was at Sumter (S.C.) High School.

  • (2:11 on the video) Green is lined up as a nose guard, over the center for Fort Dorchester High School. The quarterback, No. 5 is, of course, South Carolina freshman Dakereon Joyner. Green records a sack.
  • (2:23 on the video) Green appears to be playing a 4-technique. He goes untouched by the guard and blows up the running back. Because it was a scrimmage, there wasn’t much of a threat for Joyner to keep the ball, if it was a zone-read play. Either way, it was still an impressive look at Green’s explosiveness during his high school days.
Gamecocks make the cut for blue-chip CB

Four-star cornerback Sheridan Jones, the No. 17-ranked cornerback in the Class of 2019, listed South Carolina among his finalists, which he released on Saturday. Jones, who’s from Norfolk, Va., visited the Gamecocks earlier this spring.
