Recapping the Gamecocks’ run of recruiting weekends, part 1

South Carolina’s five-game home stand presented Will Muschamp & Co. with plenty of recruiting weekends.
From the Oct. 1 game versus Texas A&M all the way through last weekend’s win over Missouri, it was a busy run for the Gamecocks’ on-campus efforts.
Below are some of the most important 2017 recruits to visit during that stretch:
CB Jamyest Williams, Loganville, Ga.
After attending the home opener against ECU, the 4-star target returned for Georgia and Tennessee. Williams’ teammate from Grayson High School, 4-star safety Deangelo Gibbs, joined him for the Tennessee game. Of course, it remains to be seen what the interest level is like from both sides, but landing Gibbs would be quite the coup.
At this juncture, holding on to Williams may be the bigger priority for Muschamp, as the backstretch of the 2017 cycle approaches. After committing, Williams’ father made it apparent that visits to other schools would be taken, and they made good on the promise earlier this fall with a trip to Georgia.
It’s uncertain whether Williams has any taken other visits, but South Carolina still has a little bit of work to do before National Signing Day. Grinding on the recruiting trail is not an issue for these staff members, so they’re certainly up for the challenge.
S Hamsah Nasirildeen, Concord, N.C.
Three weeks after Nasirildeen visited South Carolina for the Georgia game, he was in Tallahassee to see Florida State play Clemson.
The 4-star outside linebacker, who profiles as a safety for the Gamecocks, remains firm with his pledge, but it is noteworthy that the door has been left open for Noles running backs coach Jay Graham, a Concord native.
Fortunately, for South Carolina, distance from home could be too much for Florida State to overcome. Plus, it still has an official visit on the table, and there’s plenty of time until signing day.

OT Jerry Drake Jr., Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
Drake was the first official visitor of the Muschamp era. It provided a little foreshadowing for the following weekend. A week after he was on campus for the Texas A&M game, 4-star offensive tackle T.J. Moore de-committed from the Gamecocks.
Drake has since taken an official visit to Tennessee, the school some believe to be Moore’s eventual landing spot. Drake is also planning to take official visits to Mississippi State and Oklahoma.
DT Aaron Sterling, Tucker, Ga.
The former Alabama commitment caught the thrilling 24-21 win over Tennessee. A 6-foot-2, 260-pound 3-star prospect, Sterling is also considering N.C. State, Georgia and Tennessee.
Sterling visited N.C. State earlier this fall for the Old Dominion game. A day later, he de-committed from Alabama.
S Naytron Culpepper, Miami, Fla.
Culpepper said earlier this week that South Carolina still leads Michigan State, Mississippi State and Maryland. The No. 33-ranked safety in the Class of 2017 is scheduled to visit Michigan State later this month.
Along with Gibbs, another defensive back on the South Carolina radar is Keisean Nixon, a junior college prospect who’s originally from Compton, Calif. He’ll take an official visit next weekend when Western Carolina comes to Williams-Brice Stadium for the final home game in 2016.
OT K’Rojhn Calbert, McMinnville, Tenn.
Just days before Calbert took an official visit to South Carolina, Tennessee offered the No. 23-ranked prospect from the Volunteer State. And, interestingly enough, Calbert was on campus in Columbia for the Gamecocks win over the Vols.
Calbert has taken multiple visits to Tennessee this fall. He’ll see the Gamecocks play again on Saturday when South Carolina travels to Florida. Also scheduled to be in Gainesville is 4-star offensive tackle Tony Gray, who also visited South Carolina for the Tennessee game.
