Recruiting notes for 06/04/13
DL Peyton Newell of Hawatha, KS has six finalists but will visit only two of them this summer before making his decision August 30th. Newell is down to USC, Georgia, Nebraska, Kansas, Kansas State and Southern Cal. He is going to the Big Red Weekend at Nebraska June 15th and the USC Showcase Camp in late July. The Gamecocks, Cornhuskers and Georgia are particularly strong with him though Newell is not ready to call them his top three. USC recruiter GA Mangus visited Newell twice in the final weeks of May and those visits helped the Gamecocks. “I’ve had quite a bit of contact with him the last few weeks,” Newell said. “I’m building a good relationship with him and getting more comfortable. It’s going well right now.” Newell plans to release a top three about two weeks before he announces. There is no leader right now.
“Honestly it goes back and forth every week,” he said. Newell said the decision is all his with his parents leaving up to him to make the call. Newell will have a press conference at his school to announce his decision.
RB Nick Chubb of Cedartown, GA will announce his decision next Tuesday at 6:50 pm on Fox5 in Atlanta. Chubb is down to USC, Georgia and Auburn. He visited all three last month before making his decision.
Northwestern QB Mason Rudolph is set to announce his college choice Wednesday morning at 10:00 at the high school. His announcement will be broadcast by WRHI Radio in Rock Hill. Rudolph visited Virginia Tech last weekend. The Hokies, LSU and Oklahoma State are his top three heading into his decision.
DB Denzel Franklin of Atlanta plans to visit USC this summer and has the Gamecocks high on his list. He will narrow his list down to three or four before the season and says that USC is very much in the mix. “They didn’t come by during the spring but I still talk to them,” said Franklin. “They check on me to see where I’m at and how I’m doing. I’m still very interested in them.” Georgia, Navy, Stanford and Mississippi State did visit him this spring with the Midshipmen offering on the visit. Franklin plans to visit several of these schools over the summer along with USC. He will visit Tennessee, Boston College and Virginia as well. “I just got back from Duke and they’re showing a lot of interest too,” he added. Franklin does not have a favorite. He feels Stanford, Mississippi State, Boston College and Duke are showing the most interest. His other offers include Michigan State, UCLA, and Florida.
DL Kwamelle Barnes of Saluda picked up his offer from SC State within the last two weeks. Barnes said he was not considering SC State prior to the offer but is now interested. “Now that they’ve offered, I’m definitely going to look at them,” said Barnes. “The way my grades are looking, I may not qualify. They’ve been straight up with me about that. But, they would make sure I had a place to go once I was eligible.” Barnes is focusing on his grades and was straight-forward about what is going on. “It’s really been my fault because I was a little lazy but now I understand that if you don’t have good grades, you don’t play football.” said a candid Barnes. NC State and North Carolina among others are showing interest in Barnes. He plans to attend camps at Florida, LSU, NC State and North Carolina. He is not hearing from Clemson or USC. “This summer I’m going to take some classes to see if I can start boosting my GPA up,” he said. He does not have any favorites.
