DB Wesley Green of Lithonia, GA gave put the cap on a four for four finish for USC on Signing Day by announcing for the Gamecocks over Georgia. Green had committed once before to the Gamecocks after visiting last summer with his father before backing off that in September, and in announcing his decision on Fox Sports South Green said that stuck in his mind. “I first made the decision in the summer,” he said. “I loved every aspect of South Carolina. I met with the players and coaches and that’s where I wanted to be.” Green said his official visit to USC last month also was important because he got the chance to hang out with other recruits and get to know them better. He said he also developed good relationships with the coaches. “I like coach Spurrier and coach Brown,” he said. “Me and coach Brown have developed a relationship and he coached one of my favorite cornerbacks, Patrick Peterson. We have this thing we’re trying to start, the new Legion of Boom.” Green’s commitment closes out the USC recruiting class at 21.
Long time Florida State commitment Dexter Wideman of Saluda today switched his allegiance to USC and signed with the Gamecocks at a ceremony at his school. Wideman had been committed to the Seminoles since last summer but USC kept up their recruiting efforts on him and it paid off today. “I am going to keep my talents in the state of South Carolina,” Wideman said in announcing his decision. The Shrine Bowler makes it a three for three day thus far for the Gamecocks and their targets with DB Wesley Green expected to make it four for four at 5:00. Wideman was a Shrine Bowl selection and regarded as the state’s top defensive lineman last season. “He’s extremely explosive and real quick off the ball,” said former Saluda coach Doug Painter. “He’s got good upper body strength but needs to learn how to use his body better.” Wideman’s signing gives the Gamecocks 20 recruits in their class.
DB Chris Lammons of Plantation, FL signed with USC over Wisconsin Wednesday giving the Gamecocks another significant football related victory over the Badgers in the state of Florida. The Gamecocks defeated Wisconsin in the Capital One Bowl in Orlando on January 1st. Lammons once was a Florida commitment but ended that on January 9th. He visited USC the weekend of January 17th. “It took till this morning to really sit down and think about where I was going,” says Lammons. “South Carolina and Wisconsin both were bumping heads all week. This morning I was just like, ‘I’m going to go with this one. “I could start, play early, and I feel comfortable there.” Lammons played mostly at quarterback last season but will be a corner at USC. In the Wing-T, he passed for 1100 yards and 13 touchdowns and rushed for 895 yards and 12 touchdowns. “He’s an outstanding athlete with real good speed,” said his coach Steve Davis. “He’s a 4.4 kid. And he’s got long arms. He has the reach of a person 6’3.”
DE Blake McClain (6-4 284) of Jacksonville, FL signed with USC flipping from Nebraska to whom he committed last weekend. McClain picked the Gamecocks sight unseen. He’s never visited. But USC recruiter Steve Spurrier Jr. worked him hard over the last week after he decommitted from Florida State. “It was the fact the coaches were very genuine and really showed tat they wanted me,” McClain said. He also said the chance for early playing time at USC was an important factor. Last season McClain had 24 tackles for loss, 15 sacks and forced 15 fumbles. “He’s very athletic and can play inside or outside,” said his coach Adam Geiss. “He’s a heck of an athlete. He can run and make plays.”
