Junior LB Sherrod Pittman of Jacksonville became USC’s fourth commitment in three days Monday night when be announced for the Gamecocks over Florida. Pittman’s decision follows that of DE Taylor Stallworth Saturday, his First Coast High junior teammate Jerad Washington Sunday and DL Abu Lamin on Monday. “I love the coaching staff,” Pittman said of why he picked USC on local TV in
Jacksonville. “Shaq Wilson (USC grad assistant linebacker coach) is a former First Coast player. Coach Spurrier said I’d have a chance to play early. He’s really a great coach. He has a goal in in mind of winning a SEC championship and a national championship.” Pittman is considered to be one of the top linebackers in the 2015 class. Some of his other offers were Clemson, Auburn, LSU, Miami, Florida State, Georgia Tech and Central Florida. He’s USC’s 6th commitment for the 2015 class.
DL Abu Lamin of Fort Scott JC, KS committed Monday to USC becoming the Gamecock’s 12th commitment for their 2014 class. The native of Fayetteville, NC chose USC over Florida, Arkansas, Nebraska and Alabama. “It feels really good especially going back to the Carolina’s,” Lamin said. “To me that’s what it’s all about, being back home, being able to play for some great coaches and being part of a great defense. Lamin called defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward with the news and he knows Ward and defensive line coach Deke Adams have big plans for him. “They want me to replace Kelsey Quarles,” Lamin said. “I know I have to go in there and compete. Nothing is handed to you. Replacing Kelsey Quarrels, that’s the plan. They see me coming in and playing immediately. I love pass rushing, especially interior. I stuff the run. One of the great attributes I see I can bring is getting upfield and getting after the quarterback.” Lamin will enroll in January and will have three seasons of eligibility.
USC has picked up commitment #5 for the 2015 class in WR Jerad Washington of Jacksonville, FL. Washington announced his commitment via Twitter Sunday morning. Washington was offered by the Gamecocks at their camp about a month ago and he and his parents came in Friday for the Black Magic Camp to meet with Steve Spurrier and Steve Spurrier Jr. “I caught coach Spurrier Jr.’s eye and he took a chance on me,” said Washington who compares himself to former Gamecock star receiver Ace Sanders. “I try to play like him. Coach Spurrier (Jr.) said I run very good routes from the slot position.” Washington, who runs a 4.3 forty, played his freshman season for Nease High in St. Augustine. He caught 67 passes for 790 yards and 5 touchdowns. His family moved to Maryland last season and he played his sophomore season up there, but they decided to move back to the Jacksonville area for this year. Washington’s father Reggie left little doubt the family is all for Jerad being a Gamecock. “Steve Spurrier has been none of my favorite coaches,” he said. “I’m a Gator. But after visiting that school (USC) and that campus, that’s where he’s going. We met with coach Spurrier Jr. and he said if we were serious about coming, we want him.” Jerad Washington also plays baseball for First Coast High where he is coached by former Florida quarterback and Spurrier disciple Shane Matthews.
DE Taylor Stallworth (6-3 280) of Mobile, AL committed to USC Saturday while on campus for an unofficial visit. Stallworth picked the Gamecocks over Auburn and Mississippi State. He made the visit with three of his assistant coaches and met with Steve Spurrier, Lorenzo Ward, Deke Adams and Kirk Botkin while on the visit. “I’m feeling great about it,” Stallworth said of his decision. “I feel this is the place for me the next three or four years.” Stallworth said the USC coaches told him he could be defensive end or defensive tackle. “I really like their approach to defense,” he said. “They laid down the basics and told me what’s best for me.” Last season he had 59 tackles with 9 tackles for loss and 4 sacks. Some of his other offers were Arkansas, Georgia Tech, Ole Miss, Louisville, Florida State and NC State. Stallworth is USC’s 11th commitment for the 2014 class.
South Aiken QB Bo Baldwin was contacted Monday by USC quarterbacks coach GA Mangus and was given a grayshirt offer according to his coach. “Don’t know if he’s taking it but he’s excited about it,” Jeremy West said adding he had no idea when Baldwin would make a decision. A grayshirt offer means a player won’t enroll in college until the January after his class enrolls. Baldwin worked out at last week’s camp and was also at USC’s June camp.
Goose Creek RB Caleb Kinlaw has announced a commitment to Georgia Tech. Kinlaw picked Tech over Tennessee, North Carolina and Arizona. Kinlaw visited Tech earlier this summer and Tech went from fourth to first on his list in the last few weeks. Last season Kinlaw rushed for 1000 yards and 15 touchdowns. As a sophomore he rushed for 1500 yards and 12 touchdowns.
OL Donell Stanley of Latta attended USC’s Black Magic Camp Friday afternoon along with his mother, little brother and Latta assistant coach Chris German. Stanley attended an Alabama camp earlier this month and German said Friday night right now USC and Alabama are Stanley’s top two. Clemson and North Carolina are the others on his short list. Stanley arrived on campus around 2:00 PM and was given a tour of the campus by line coach Shawn Elliott. He also met with Steve Spurrier while on the visit. Stanley also worked out with the other offensive linemen who were at the camp. “He enjoyed it, really enjoyed it,” German said. Stanley has no other visits planned and German said a decision is close. “He should be about ready to pull the trigger,” German said. “Next couple of weeks probably. He thoroughly enjoyed the Alabama and Carolina visits. I don’t know where he’s leaning more towards right now.” Asked if USC and Alabama are the top two, German said, “Yes.” Stanley headed down to the beach for a final vacation after the camp. He will begin his pre-season camp next Friday.
USC and Clemson WR target Braxton Berrios of Raleigh was offered by Ohio State Friday night while he was on campus for a camp. Berrios got the offer directly from head coach Urban Meyer. Berrios has also been to USC and Kentucky this month. He’s had USC, Clemson, Tennessee, West Virginia and Kentucky as his favorites though Ohio State is likely to join that group.
