Florida State commitment DL Dexter Wideman of Saluda was among the prospects in attendance last Saturday night in Columbia for the USC-Vanderbilt game. Wideman went with several of his Saluda teammates according to his coach Doug Painter. “It was a game he wanted to go to,” Painter said. “He’s still talking about Florida State. He’s still saying that. I don’t think that anything has changed along those lines.” Wideman committed to the Seminoles in July but has not totally closed the door on the Gamecocks according to Painter. “I feel sure he’ll go back to Carolina again. I’m just guessing that there is still a chance there.” Wideman has not set any official visits at this point. As for his performance this season, Painter said he couldn’t be happier with Wideman. “He’s having his best season,” the coach said. “He’s more consistent because he’s in better shape.” DL Kwamelle Barnes of Saluda also was at Saturday’s game. He has an offer from SC State and is getting interest from Appalachian State and North Greenville.
DL Zeek Rodney of South Pointe had 26 sacks as a junior and is working his way towards another big season of collaring quarterbacks. Rodney has a handful of solid offers but unfortunately for him, the big boys aren’t paying attention. Rodney has offers from Boston College, SC State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Marshall, Appalachian State, Toledo and Ball State. He’s hearing nothing from Clemson and USC. “It’s disappointing,” Rodney said of the lack of interest from the two major in-state programs. He’s hearing the most from BC, Charlotte and Ball State at this point. Rodney has not taken any visits this season and has not thought about official visits. “I’m trying to focus on keeping on doing what I’m doing and focus more on the class room,” said Rodney who has helped the Stallions get off to an undefeated start. He would like to make his decision before the playoffs.
Junior DB Mark Fields Jr. (5-11 184) of Cornelius, NC has Clemson and USC high up on his early list and he has seen both in person this season. Fields was at Clemson for the Georgia game and was at USC for the Vanderbilt game. “The Clemson atmosphere was great,” Fields said. “It’s the only ACC school with a SEC environment. They told me I can come in and make an impact right away. South Carolina played Vanderbilt and it was still packed. I got to go to the lockerroom and see pre-game and see how the players interact with the coaches. The facilities are about the same. Both have similar things. Not one stands out more than the other.” Fields, who is the son of former Carolina Panthers linebacker Mark Fields Sr., hopes to get to the LSU-Alabama game and he wants to go to Tennessee for a game. He has offers from Clemson, USC, Tennessee, NC State, North Carolina and Ohio State. He said he’s really not interested in staying in North Carolina for college. “Of the offers I have,” Fields said, “USC and Clemson are right up there but I’m still open. I’m waiting on more program to pull the trigger (on offers).” Fields plans to make his decision next summer. Fields is a very athletic defensive back who can play corner and safety. He also plays running back.

Junior RHP Sam Finnerty (6-0 185) of Pelham, AL committed to USC Saturday. Finnerty announced his commitment via Twitter while at USC for a visit. “So thankful to have a blessed life! It’s official I’m gonna be a South Carolina gamecock!!” Finnerty is the sixth pitcher to commit to USC for the 2015 class, the fourth righthander. He can also play the outfield.
