Recruiting Recap

01/20/14

Shrine Bowl DL Poona Ford of Hilton Head met Monday morning with USC recruiters Everette Sands and Deke Adams and set an official visit with the Gamecocks for this coming weekend. He had been scheduled to visit Oregon. Last week Ford had decided he wouldn’t visit USC and scheduled three other visits, but after tripping to Texas over the weekend, he had a change of heart about the Gamecocks. “It just kind of happened,” Ford said. “It’s close to home.” Ford said his grandmother will join him on the visit. And while saying he doesn’t have a favorite among his final three of USC, Texas and Missouri, Ford said a commitment to USC this weekend is possible if everything goes well. He is scheduled to visit Missouri on January 31st.

USC Monday reached out to another standout defensive lineman with an official offer. Shrine Bowler Arthur Williams of Fayetteville, NC met Monday morning at his home for about ninety minutes with Gamecock recruiter Joe Robinson and was given an offer by the Gamecocks. Williams currently is committed to Florida State. He also has offers from Miami and East Carolina. “We talked about the football program and me making my visit (January 31st),” Williams said. “We also went over my eligibility. I’m in good shape. I feel like they are making a strong push. Coach Robinson said they want me to be a part of the program.” Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher and assistant Jay Graham will make an in home visit with Williams Tuesday night and he is scheduled for his official visit to FSU this weekend. But USC is making an impression on him. “I’ll feel a little better (about USC) after I see the campus and talk to the players,” he said. “My commitment is still strong to Florida State but USC is coming after me pretty strong.” Williams is the second Florida State defensive line commitment USC is attempting to turn. Dexter Wideman of Saluda visited USC over the weekend. This season Williams had 104 tackles and 6 sacks.

USC visits:

DB Wesley Green of Lithonia, GA has completed his official visit to USC. He told GamecockCentral he is now favoring USC over Georgia coming off the visit. Green had been considering Ole Miss as a third option but has dropped the Rebels. He will take his official visit to Georgia January 31st and will announce a final choice on Signing Day.

DL Dexter Wideman of Saluda has completed his visit to USC and while the Gamecocks may have improved their position some, Wideman is still committed to Florida State. “Nothing has changed yet. I’m going to wait until after my visit (to Florida State) on the 31st,” Wideman said. He added that he enjoyed his visit and liked hanging out with the players and talking with them and the coaches. Wideman said he’s not sure when USC coaches will be in to see him this week. As for the strength of his commitment to Florida State, Wideman said, “It’s still the same. The visit did move me some in (USC’s) direction but I don’t want to say. I’m just waiting until after the visit on the 31st.”

DB DJ Smith of Marietta, GA, who is a USC commitment, said he’s not doing any more interviews but he confirmed he is still committed to USC and he will take his official visit to Tennessee this coming weekend.

DL Taylor Stallworth of Mobile, AL has been committed to USC since July and his official visit with the Gamecocks over the weekend all but sealed the deal with him. Stallworth called the strength of his pledge a “10″ after the visit. He is scheduled to visit Mississippi State this coming weekend but that trip is in doubt now and is something he will discuss with his parents Monday afternoon. “If I could sign today, I would sign with South Carolina,” Stallworth said. “I got to meet some of the players and learned about how it us up there. And I met the coaches and the recruits I’m going to be around when I get there. Coach Spurrier told me to prepare myself to come in and help them win an SEC championship.” Stallworth said no coaches are scheduled to visit him this coming week but he’s expecting Spurrier to visit the following week.

OL Damian Prince of Forestville, MD made his official visit to USC. That was his third official visit. He’s also been to Florida State and Maryland. He is scheduled to visit Florida January 31st. Penn State is now talking to Prince since James Franklin took over and is trying to get him in for a visit as well.

DB Chris Lammons of Plantation, FL made his official visit to USC over the weekend and as expected he did not make a commitment. Lammons has also visited Wisconsin and going to decide between the Gamecocks and Badgers. Wisconsin recruiters were in to see him earlier this week and USC is to be down this coming week. Lammons will wait until Signing Day for his announcement.

Other News:

RB Derrell Scott of Havelock, NC made his official visit to Florida over the weekend. Havelock assistant coach Caleb King talked briefly Sunday with Scott. “He said it was nice,” King said adding that Scott doesn’t say much about anything. King said Florida coach Will Muschamp does not plan to make an in home visit this week. Tennessee coach Butch Jones will be in on Wednesday and USC coach Steve Spurrier makes his in home visit Thursday. Scott will announce his choice January 27th at 3:15 PM.

DB Derrick Tindal of Ft. Lauderdale said Monday he’s no longer considering USC. Tindal had a visit to USC scheduled for this coming weekend but will visit TCU instead. He went to Wisconsin this past weekend. He has been committed to Indiana and said that commitment remains in place at this point.
