Recruiting Updates For May 2nd: Notes from USC cookout, Andrew Thomas update; Murray makes decision

Will Muschamp’s cookout Saturday at USC produced two commitments and a lot of good will between his coaching staff and the prospects.  There was little recruiting and football talk and more socializing and relationship building.

WR Austin Connor of Dutch Fork has been a regular visitor to USC so there’s not much more for him to see.  And he enjoyed the low key atmosphere of Saturday.  “It was really fun and entertaining.  It was pretty much just for fun, not recruiting.”  But did the idea of committing cross his mind?  “Well, of course things like that stay on my mind considering USC is one of my top colleges but I haven’t been able to narrow my choices down enough to make a commitment anywhere yet.”  Connor said he has no favorite from his top five of USiC, Virginia Tech, Vanderbilt, Tennessee and Georgia and he has no timetable for a decision.”

DB Lummie Young of Westside also found the environment relaxing and recruiting-stress free.  “I saw a whole different side of it.  I loved it.  It was more relaxed and fun, a side opposite of football.”  Duke has been his favorite over USC and NC State.

USC commitment OL Eric Douglas of Charlotte and teammates OL TJ Moore, who has been favoring the Gamecocks, and WR Ryan Jones, who is committed to North Carolina, attended the USC cookout Saturday.

Some others in attendance Saturday were DB Tre Shaw of Ellenwood, GA, DE Brad Johnson of Pendleton, Wren QB Jay Urich, DL Tyrone Truesdell of Augusta, 2018 DE Xavier Thomas of Wilson, 2018 DL Josh Belk of Lewisville, 2018 OL Kavesz Sherard of TL Hanna, 2018 DL Kelijiah Brown of Saluda and 2019 DE Zacch Pickens of TL Hanna.

ATH Juwan Burgess of Tampa will announce his college decision Wednesday.  Clemson and USC are among his offers but Clemson holds a much stronger position with him.  Miami, Florida and Kentucky are others he cited this spring as making a strong push for him along with Clemson.  His announcement will be made around 6:00 PM Wednesday.

QB Kaymen Cureton of Lawndale, CA, who holds a USC offer, was offered over the weekend by Alabama.  Cureton has been committed to San Jose State and said while getting an offer from the national champions is big, it doesn’t change his commitment right now.  “I’m very cautious in my approach because at the end of the day it’s still business and still my future. I want to give each university an equal opportunity and disregard prestige but find the right fit for me through solid communication, honesty, and feel for environment. Which is why I’m going to take all my trips.”  Cureton, whose  grandmother lives in Beaufort,  planned to contact Gamecock recruiter Travaris Robinson to get an update on his position with the Gamecocks.  He also has offers from LSU, Boston College, Nevada, New Mexico and Colorado State.

USC Sunday offered 2018 LB Ricky Person of Franklinton, NC.
