SPARTANBURG

Running back Rico Dowdle out of Asheville originally planned on spending this week Christmas shopping and hanging out at home.

Instead, the injury replacement for the Shrine Bowl landed an offer from South Carolina on Wednesday and scored two touchdowns in the all-star game to help North Carolina to a 54-39 win over South Carolina.

The A.C. Reynolds standout rushed three times for 19 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown. He also caught a team-high five passes for 48 yards and another score.

“That was very nice to get to score touchdowns in a game like this, an all star game,” Dowdle said. “These are very exciting moments when you score touchdowns in games like this. It was memorable.”

Dowdle’s originally from Gaffney and still has family there. He grew up a South Carolina fan and was thrilled to receive an offer from the Gamecocks.

“It’s a school I’ve always been interested in. It was my dream school when I was younger because I’m originally from South Carolina,” he explained. “It’s somewhere that I’ve always wanted to go, the South Carolina Gamecocks. I like that coach (Shawn) Elliott got it done like he told me he was. That’s very exciting.”

Dowdle’s planning to take official visits to Wake Forest Jan. 15, South Carolina Jan. 22 and possibly Tennessee Jan. 29. He said he hopes to make a decision by the end of January.

Dowdle was rated as a two-star prospect by Rivals and 247Sports earlier this week, but received a bump to four stars by 247Sports. Still, he said he doesn’t pay attention to recruiting rankings .

“I don’t think that the stars matter, really. There are a bunch of great athletes in the world that aren’t rated at all,” he said. “Some are two stars like I was. There are a bunch of good athletes. A two star could be better than a five star. It’s just all politics to me.”

DAWKINS TO VISIT USC

Byrnes wide receiver Chavis Dawkins will visit USC in January, he said after Saturday’s Shrine Bowl. Dawkins is unsure on the exact date of the visit.

He has been communicating with former Byrnes coach Bobby Bentley, who’s now the running backs coach at South Carolina. The Gamecocks haven’t offered Dawkins.

“They want me down there. I’ll just go down there and see what they’re talking about and choose from there,” he said.

Dawkins had a game-high six catches for 62 yards and two touchdowns for the Sandlappers. He’s also planning to visit Appalachian State and Lousiville.
