Rising in-state LB excited about Will Muschamp era at South Carolina

June 15, 2016

After registering 20 sacks as a defensive end for South Pointe High School, Eli Adams is in the midst of his transition to linebacker.

It’s a move the 6-foot, 230-pound Class of 2018 prospect from Rock Hill, S.C., is embracing.

“It’s football, so I love the sport and I love playing defense, just making plays and having fun with it,” Adams said. “This transition … it just puts me in another position to help my team in a different way. I enjoy it. It’s pretty fun, too, even though I love the d-line. It’s pretty fun right there, too.”

Adams and several of his teammates from South Pointe made the short trek down I-77 last week to participate in the Will Muschamp Football Camp. Along with athlete Derion Kendrickand cornerback Steven Gilmore Jr., Adams is one of three rising juniors on the Stallions roster with an offer from South Carolina.

“I had fun. I had a great time. The coaching staff, just being around them, just building on our relationship. I had a great time,” Adams said.

The interest appears to be mutual, and for good reason. In 2015, Adams had 114 tackles and 16 tackles for loss to go along with his lofty high school sack total.

South Carolina’s coaches kept it light with Adams when he was on campus last week.

“It was just mostly catching up and saying hey, mostly joking around with Muschamp and coach (Travaris Robinson),” he said.

This past Saturday, Adams visited Virginia Tech.

“Virginia Tech, it was nice. It was beautiful up there. The coaches and I hit it off, as soon as I got in there. All of them enjoyed me and I enjoyed being there,” he said.

For now, South Carolina is his only offer, and the Gamecocks, of course, sit at the top his list.

“I grew up liking that school. I grew up down the road,” Adams said. “What coach Muschamp is doing, coming back and rebuilding the program back up, starting a new era, that (would be) fun to be a part of … if I made that decision to go to South Carolina, I would have fun being a part of that era.”
