RJ Roderick ‘excited all day’ by South Carolina offer
April 18, 2017
RJ Roderick had slowly been getting the feeling a South Carolina offer would be coming soon. But the 2018 Summerville (S.C.) Cane Bay safety kept quiet about that feeling, despite many indications in the past few weeks that an offer was near.
On Monday, the good news finally came for Roderick when he visited Columbia and spent a full day around the South Carolina coaches and campus. And the time spent with coach Will Muschamp and defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson left Roderick with a strong impression.
“More than any facility or any physical thing or any building that could grab my attention, it was more being around the coaches and them treating me more like family,” Roderick said. “It’s more than me being a student-athlete or a football player. They care more about my future and life after football. They didn’t have to emphasize that for me to pick up on it. A lot of what they were saying revolved around that.”
The 6-foot, 207-pound Roderick visited for the spring game on April 1, which is when he started getting the feeling that an offer might be coming soon. Tight ends coach Pat Washington, who recruits his area, introduced Roderick to Muschamp. A couple days later, Roderick received a call from Robinson, who divulged that the Gamecocks were really interested in him.
“They were talking about a potential offer, but I hadn’t fully grasped the conversation afterward,” Roderick said. “I kept a lot of what was said under wraps until I got there on the visit.”
Roderick, who holds 8 offers, including Virginia, acknowledged and processed a lot of what Muschamp said to him following the visit. The second-year South Carolina coach told Roderick that he sees a bright future at safety for the 2-way player who also stands out as a triple-option quarterback.
The potential to be coached by Muschamp, who works with the safeties, is something that is enticing to Roderick.
“For him to say the things that he says and that he sees a bright future in me and believes in me, that he’s confidence in my ability, is big,” Roderick said. “He’s coached at LSU, Florida and coached LaRon Landry, Vernon Hargreaves and a lot of people that he has been around with talent. He said he sees a lot of Keanu Neal in me. With him being confident in me and being up front about things like that, it really ups my comfort level. I feel at home. I was excited all day. I was speechless after he told me.”
Roderick plans to visit South Carolina again on April 29 for SpursUp day. He also is planning summer visits to Duke and Virginia.
Chris Smith keeps Gamecocks in it
2018 cornerback Chris Smith cut his list to 6 schools on Monday night, with the Gamecocks included. South Carolina was an early offer for Smith, proposing the scholarship to the talented Atlanta Hapeville Charter prospect last April.

Coach Hutzler pitches Jake Bentley to WR prospect
South Carolina is immersed in its pursuit of 2018 wide receiver Jatavious Harris, and Gamecocks coach Coleman Hutlzer recently pulled out a solid pitch to the Milledgeville (Ga.) Baldwin prospect.
Hutzler emphasized that he would want to play with quarterback Jake Bentley if he was a wide receiver recruit, sending the note in a letter to Harris.

It surely won’t be the final time that Bentley’s name is used in a recruiting pitch, as the talented, rising sophomore is helping put the Gamecocks back on the map — and has at least 2 more years in Columbia.
The 6-foot-3, 184-pound Harris has the Gamecocks in his top 8 schools.
