One of the most veteran Gamecock defensive players announced Saturday he will return for another run with the Gamecocks in 2022. Safety RJ Roderick will take advantage of the extra year the NCAA is allowing as a result of the pandemic.
Roderick completed his fourth season with the Gamecocks in Thursday’s bowl win over North Carolina. He’s been a major contributor since the day he walked on campus from Cane Bay High in January of 2018.
“I’ve decided to return to the University of South Carolina for my final season,” Roderick wrote in his tweet. “There’s a lot of unfinished business and we have not even scratched the surface of our potential. Let’s run it back.”
For his career, Roderick has 199 tackles with 2 interceptions and 4 forced fumbles. His return will help to offset the loss of All-American safety Jaylen Foster who has used up all of his eligibility after six seasons in college.
Roderick is the second key defensive contributor to announce a return for 2022. Last week linebacker Sherrod Greene, who missed most of the season with a lower leg injury, announced he will return next season.
