Coach Erik Kimrey talked about this and really brought it to light for me. The RPO that most teams use now, Gamecocks rely on this heavily. Was used to help out the offense counteract Today's defenses but has lead to the defenses being able to help predict the tendency that the offensive next play will be. Most teams use it, But some teams use it for their base offense and the gamecocks are guilty of that. Muschamp and  should be aware. It allows teams to key on your running game passing game because simply put they know you next move. The script is important to a time but teams need not relay on it for their main game plan.  Simply but if you fully relay on this method defenses will  key on your pass game or running game with any disguise you use to cover it up.  Need a coach in the house to help me here.

The issue here is this;

The RPO is meant to have the defense unsure of which option you will actually use. And it can be very successful.

1. The QB looks at how the D lines up and then decides whether to actually hand off the ball are hang on to it and pass

However, the good D Coordinators figured it out. They learned what formation would lure what option. So they trained their run D to look like they were covering a pass and their pass D to look like they were covering a Run.

2. The QB thinks he sees this happening so he decides via coaches approval to change the reads

Guess what, those D coordinators figured that out to and started jazzing up their D to really confuse the QB. Then they got their LBs and Safeties to read what the RB was doing and fill any holes or drop back real quick. That is what our D tried against Bama but those short slants ate us up because their receivers were so quick. If you were not right there they were gone. We were able to stop the run pretty good but not the pass.

Sadly our DC is not so good. It is very obvious what our D is covering. He has not trained them to be deceptive enough. A good experienced QB like Bryant can read us way to easy. UK's Smith may not have enough playing time to make those reads. That might be the only thing that saves our D this game.

And I really wish our OC would give it a break. Instead he plays it 80% of the time. We got some strong runners. When is the last time you saw 2 running backs in the backfield except when it was obvious Joyner was going to keep the ball. I'm sorry. Right now, DC's got it to easy against us. And once being one, Champ should see that.

Good explanation on RPO.  :thumbs-up-hand-gesture-smiley-small:

i havent listened yet but im going to first chance i get.  the old run n shoot offenses had a similar concept of run vs pass based on the number of guys in the box but obviously that was presnap.  you cant allow the defense to completely dictate what youre going to do to the point where you end up predictable with no balance.  makes it more likely you end up in a 3rd and long where an rpo for the most part is useless.

early on great point about the flaw of putting joyner at qb and keeping hilinski on the field, youre making yourself more predictable.  other trend theyve pointed out is we almost seem scared to run the ball in short yardage.

Good info.

This is one the things I have been griping about is how we don't disguise what we are doing defensively and on offense we are very predictable as well.

I noticed that there is a lot more movement in the opposition's Defense than ours. If we are confused and running plays into the teeth of the opponent's Defense, that would explain issues that we have had against teams like UVA, Mizzou, and UNC, where the Offense appeared lost.

So is the issue with poor QB play - bad reads, bad decisions, bad passes - or poor calls from the sidelines, running the plays into the teeth of the Defense? Or combination of both? I would go with the latter - there were not a lot of open receivers, but we missed the guys when they were open.

And, of course, if the opponent's D is confusing our Offense with movement - then why aren't we doing the same thing? And why aren't we bringing more pressure, like Mizzou did to us?

We seem to be reactive. Time to get active.
Maybe just a simple problem, no imagination on both sides of the ball. Kinda goes back to a vanilla coach we have in place. Good cheer leader like the headman upstate. If he is going to stick around really need some high quality coordinators to run the show. save the 22m  and use the money two get coordinators.

Thank you for explaining why these teams seem to have our play book. Hopefully, the coaches can work through this.

If this is the case it is concerning to me that our OC does not recognize it.  It is also equally concerning that our defensive coaches don't see it and share with the OC.
