SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Now that class of 2014 four-star running back Derrell Scott (Havelock, N.C./Havelock) has closed out his high school career with a third straight state championship secured, he now plans to turn his attention to a final decision.
The 3A state championship Most Valuable Player has narrowed his list of many offers down to three schools: South Carolina, Tennessee and N.C. State -- he's already taken official visits to all three.
"Now that the season is over, I'm probably going to sit down and think about it more now," Scott said. "I haven't really had much time to sit down and think about it like I wanted to, during the season. I've been trying to focus on everything else."
The 5-foot-11, 180-pound Scott, who carries a rating of 95 as 247Sports' No. 2 all-purpose back in his class, has been considered a South Carolina lean for much of his recruitment. But word out of Havelock is that Tennessee has caught -- or even passed -- the Gamecocks as Scott's recruitment comes to a close.
Scott took an official visit to Tennessee the weekend of Oct. 5 and was hosted by former teammate, freshman defensive end Kendal Vickers.
"Really the chance for me to go in there and play early," stands out, Scott says. "I just like the things that (Tennessee head) coach (Butch) Jones is doing. [He tells me] I can get on the field early and that they don't have a guy like me there."
Jones and South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier will conduct in-home visits with Scott in January.
Scott's recruiter of record at South Carolina, Deke Adams. and running backs coach Everette Sands took in Scott's 209-yard, three-touchdown state championship performance Saturday.
"They've probably been recruiting me longer than anybody else has so that sticks out," Scott said of the Gamecocks. "They've been there for me for a long time. I just like South Carolina, it's hard to explain."
Scott took an official visit to South Carolina the weekend of Nov. 6 and was also hosted by a former teammate, freshman wide receiver Pharoh Cooper.
What have the Gamecocks been telling him?
"I'm their guy still and have been their guy since Day 1, ever since they started recruiting me my freshman year, Scott said. "They don't want anybody else but me, they don't want to take anybody else."
