Ryan Hilinski’s debut was just the beginning

Sept. 08, 2019

His day was near as perfect as one could write it. He hit his first 12 passes. When it looked as if he was only feasting on short throws, he hit a 60-yard bomb for a touchdown. The team scored 70-plus points and posted its most yards ever. No it was not  against Alabama, but you play whoever is in front of you that day. (VIEW ARTICLE)

Hilinski's passes were so nearly perfect that the receivers had a hard time dropping them.  I don't want to pile on Jake, but there was a marked difference between the ability of the receivers to catch each of the their passes.  For whatever reason, the receivers were able to catch Ryan's passes better.  I don't know if he was leading them better, or has a gentler touch, or whatever it was, but it made a huge difference.

He played like Garcia did against Alabama near perfect passing.... if he can do it again this week we have a chance. We may need 72 points again unless our defense starts using some of that Clemson shampoo.

We all wish Jake a speedy recovery and really appreciate his dedication to Gamecock football.

However, if he has a chance at the NFL, he needs a fresh start where he can reset his career and make an impression so that his last 2 games become a distant memory.

If he can graduate before Jan, he can do spring training as a grad transfer.

I have to wonder if Jake's malaise...
Some of that was there all along, but only seemed to show up in tough SEC games or certain other games. The exception is that stretch during Nov last year where Jake was smoking hot....then the last 3 games hit the skids.

While this is kind of a sad ending to one of our QBs moving up the record books, I don't think we were going to win many more games with him at QB.

If Ryan is another Connor Shaw, we're in for some fun football.
