Ryan Hilinski The QB how he impressed coaches and teammates so far

Sept. 04, 2019

In a perfect world the Gamecocks would have a strong 2018 season, Bentley would ride off to the NFL and Hilinski would beat the field for the job to replace him. Reality that has all changed, a foot injury will sideline Bentley for between six weeks and the whole season. (VIEW ARTICLE)

He should get a good warm up this weekend, assuming the rest of the team plays well like they should. The Bama game will be the real test. If he can move the ball up and down the field against them, we might be in for a fun time soon.

I'm not going to hold my breath on that but if he can make quick decisions and get the ball out to our playmakers then I'll be happy.

I think part of the key is to create some more crossing routes, slants, out routes, dump offs, etc. so he doesn't have to sit back in the pocket too much. I think once he gains some confidence with real game action that he will be able to hit some long shots and feel more comfortable reading defenses and making all of the throws he is capable of making.

We will have to beat Bama as a team to get the win.

So it's not just on Ryan or any other QB for that matter.

Just get some valuable experience for both RH and DJ this weekend.  Get some semblance of an OL in both run and pass blocking and work on a game plan and in game adjustments.  Don't just show up calling the same plays that aren't working expecting different results.

You want see much of what Ryan may can do. He will throw a few but they will run the ball, if they can and try to hide as much as possible from Bama. It wont matter in my book if Bama does see what Ryan can do, but I think that is what our coaching staff will do.

I do believe this weekend will be about establishing the run and getting our blocking schemes worked out as last week we were very out of sync, which really worries me.  I would look for us to use a blocking tight end a lot until/if we get everything else figured out.  RH high school film looked like he processed and distributed the ball well and has a quick short throwing motion.  Let's hope he can carry some of that over to the next level.  If the receivers are confident that they are going to get the ball where and when it is supposed to be there, I think you will see their overall catching ability to improve.
