Sandlappers rise to the occasion and surprise Tar Heels 23-19 (AUDIO)
Romello Doctor of Ashley Ridge scores SC’s first touchdown in Saturday’s Shrine Bowl victory
They weren’t supposed to be big enough, fast enough or good enough to defeat the more heralded North Carolina team, but the South Carolina Sandlappers would hear none of that. They scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to rally for a 23-19 victory in the 76th Shrine Bowl of the Carolina’s Saturday at Gibbs Stadium at Wofford College.
The Tar Heels led 13-9 entering the fourth quarter but the Sandlappers put together a pair of 80 yard scoring drives to take the lead. Mychal Moody of Conway ran in from five yards out with 14:03 to play to give SC a 16-13 lead. NC then missed on a 48 yard field goal and SC went on its second drive capped by a 14 yard pass from Michael Julian of Hilton Head to a wide open Keinan Lewis of Belton Honea-Path with 3;14 to play.
The Tar Heels made it interesting by going 75 yards in 10 plays with quarterback Noah Suber running in from the ten for the score. The extra point was blocked and it was 23-19 with 2:38 to play

NC attempted an onside kick and SC recovered at its own 46 and ran out the clock for their second win in the last three years. The Sandlappers now lead the series 42-30-4.

NC outgained SC 284-224 but was hurt by four turnovers. The Tar Heels Pharoh Cooper, a USC commitment, was by far the biggest star in the game. He rushed for 104 yards including a 45 yard touchdown, had 3 receptions for 39 yards and 110 yards in returns. He finished the day with 253 all purpose yards.
Julian led the Sandlappers with 147 yards passing and a touchdown. Malcolm Green of Conway had three catches for 98 yards including a 40 yard catch that was the big play of the second fourth quarter scoring drive.
Defensively, SC was led by TL Hanna LB Ben Boulware. The Clemson commitment totaled 9 tackles including 2.5 for loss. He also had an interception and a fumble recovery.
Green and Boulware were the SC MVPs and Cooper and LB Quinton Patterson were the NC MVPs.

The Sandlappers lost standout ATH Tramel Terry of Goose Creek on the opening kickoff. The state’s Mr. Football injured his knee while cutting. He fumbled on the play and NC recovered at the SC 8. The Tar Heels scored three plays later. Post game reports indicated that Terry had suffered a serious knee injury.
A crowd estimated at 7000 attended the game which culminates the Shriners’ annual fund raising effort for the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
