Saturday morning recruiting report
July 30, 2022 Sportstalk
The Gamecocks started the weekend with a cook-out Friday night at Williams-Brice Stadium. Of course, Friday got off to a positive start for Shane Beamer with a public commitment from 2024 CB Karson Hobbs. Five outs later, Beamer tweeted another commitment alert. As of early Saturday morning, no prospect has come forward to claim that alert.
One good possibility, however, would be OT Elijah Phillipe (6-7 310) of Lackawanna JC, PA. He arrived Thursday night for his two-day official visit, and Friday night would have been about the time for his exit conversation with Beamer. The Gamecocks have recruited Phillipe with a lot of energy, and this has been his only official visit thus far. Florida State and Virginia Tech are his other P5 offers.
Another possibility for that alert would be OT Oluwatosin Babalade of Hyattsville, MD. He was originally scheduled to visit Maryland over the weekend but made a return visit to USC. He confirmed he was on campus Friday night though his trip was first reported by Hale McGranahan and Jeff Ermann of 247Sports. Babalade also has North Carolina and Rutgers on his short list, but his decision is expected to be between the Gamecocks and Terps. He had planned to announce it on Sunday but postponed that earlier in the week.
Other non-committed prospects who confirmed Friday night their visits to Columbia include 2024 WR Mazeo Bennett of Greenville, 2024 OT Blake Franks of Greenville, 2024 DT Michai Boireau of Fairburn, GA, and 2024 LB Sammy Brown of Jefferson, GA. Also in attendance, as confirmed by TheBigSpur, was DE/TE Nyckoles Harbor of Washington, DC. Harbor has a short list of USC, Michigan, Southern Cal, Miami, Maryland, Georgia, and LSU. Harbor is also one of the nation’s top sprinters and will heading to a national track event from Columbia.
Barring any more commitment alerts from Beamer, the Gamecocks have three other targets set to announce this weekend. Sumter DE Monteque Rhames will announce Saturday at 7:00 PM. Sunday, WR Carmelo Taylor of Roanoke, VA, and OT Markee Anderson of Dorman will reveal their decisions around 3:00 PM.
Other recruiting news
DT Daevin Hobbs of Concord, NC, who has USC in his top six, was offered by Georgia. He also has Alabama, Auburn, Michigan, North Carolina, and Tennessee on his shortlist. Clemson is also recruiting him.
