Hilinksi's Hope means so much to the Hilinski family, their friends, Gamecock Nation, college football fans across the country and those who have been affected by someone suffering from mental illness. We were appalled to see this morning's headline in The State newspaper that seemed cavalier about the seriousness of the mental health issue. It demonstrated a level of unprofessional and irresponsible journalism, and we find it unacceptable that the major daily newspaper in the hometown of our University would use such a headline in their game story. We don't believe their apology is enough. We urge The State to be a leader in advocating and destigmatizing mental illness by making a very public effort to help fund and provide educational awareness to this very real problem.

Bob Caslen, University President
Ray Tanner, Athletics Director
Will Muschamp, Head Football Coach

Absolutely inexcusable headline. And now they're blaming it on some low level designer in Charlotte. It's 100% BS. Someone thought they were being clever or cute with the wordplay and crapped on the Hilinkski family and their foundation. The State coverage of USC football is complete tabloid trash and they should be disinvited to all athletic department press conferences and events until they can demonstrate actual professionalism and objectivity.

I thought Spurrier's beef with Ron Morris was childish, but this is much worse as it is a trivialization of a player's family's well intentioned and meaningful charity work. Imagine if a Raleigh newspaper headline diminished the Jimmy V Foundation in a similar way. Inexcusable.

WTF.  How does that even get through to print?  I’m trying to imagine a scenario where the person who wrote the headline didn’t have the first clue about Hilinski’s Hope and this was an honest accident but that would have to be a pretty unbelievable coincidence.  What a PR nightmare for them.  They took the tragic death of a young man and turned it into a punchline. What kind of person does that?

What is worse is at no point did someone think "maybe we should change that".  It's not like they were rushing to get to print because the game got over late, and it slipped by.  They had a LONG time between the end of the game and going to print for someone, anyone, to stop this.  And the passing the buck by the powers that be at The State is comic relief, truly.

I honestly think that USC should pull the press credentials for The State for all events...athletic and academic..everything (and yes I realize that freedom of press would obviously not allow this position)

In a time of hypersensitivity to mental illness and stigmas associated with such, this is unexcusable.  The press release is correct..this is inexcusible and a simple mea culpa is unacceptable.  In the time and days of the internet, there is no reason for USC to support the paper

Time to reach out to some of the papers advertisers!! This is SO over and beyond insensitive. No excuse for that including their -it was edited by a toddler in Charlotte-defense.

You have to let them come to the dance, doesn't mean anybody will dance with them. The coaches need to get together and agree to refuse to answer any questions of any nature asked by anybody from the state.

Here are some other notable headlines by The State over the years .

Next week all of the staff at The State are showing up to sporting events in black face. The week after, they'll be throwing rocks at disabled children. It's ok though. They already have a canned apology prepared.

I wondered this week with Josh Kendall going to Leprad to get the scoop on Joyner if he was not just a little upset with USC about how they called out The State on this situation. I believe the person that crafted this headline knew exactly what they were doing and thought they would be funny. Total bush league move.
