SEC Football Top 150 Players: No. 90, Akeem Auguste, South Carolina DB
The SEC Blog will be counting down the top 150 players in the SEC every day, concluding on Aug. 30, at the start of the college football regular season.
90. Akeem Auguste, No. 3, South Carolina Defensive Back
2011 stats: Four tackles, took a medical redshirt
Strengths
Auguste is a versatile defensive back that has played free safety and cornerback during his Gamecock career. As a free safety in 2010, he tallied 58 tackles—good for fifth on the team. He has good cover skills, is capable of adding help over the top and isn't afraid to stick his nose in and help out in run support.
Weaknesses
The injury concern is there due to the fact that he hasn't played in almost a year. He underwent season-ending foot surgery early last season after registering only four tackles against Georgia in South Carolina's second game of the season. He's going to have to knock the rust off early, because South Carolina opens on the road in the SEC at Vanderbilt.
2012 Prediction
Auguste is moving back to cornerback for his senior season, and is currently listed as a starter on South Carolina's most recent depth chart. Someone is going to have to step in for the recently-departed Stephon Gilmore, and Auguste is the likely candidate. Having a pass rush that is second-to-none should help out Auguste and the entire Gamecock defensive backfield.
