11. South Carolina Gamecocks

Shutouts get you extra credit, even against the FCS. You probably won’t get many of these (if any more at all) this season, but you’re in the A-range, Gamecocks, and get to just barely leap over Tennessee. Grade: A-

11. South Carolina

A shutout of Eastern Illinois brings the Gamecocks up two spots to No. 11 in the power rankings. Graduate quarterback Zeb Noland did relatively well and things are semi-looking up in Columbia.

Do I believe that the Gamecocks will do much of anything in SEC play? Not as of yet, but they will easily knock off Eastern Carolina on Saturday, so the South Carolina faithful will have another week to wave their towels and yell exciting things before the real thing begins.

12. South Carolina

Previous ranking: 13
Last week: 46-0 W vs. Eastern Illinois
This week: at East Carolina (0-1)

The Shane Beamer era got off to a hot start, albeit against an FCS foe. QB Zeb Noland looked great at times, but it remains to be seen if he’ll start against East Carolina this week or if Luke Doty is back from injury. Either way, this is a sneaky matchup for the Gamecocks. They’ll have to be strong from the opening kickoff to avoid an upset.
