Most of the upper tier teams with one loss have lost to comparable OOC teams.  Here are the notable losses to lesser teams:

  • UGA beat #18 Memphis 82-79 last night, but lost 68-65 to Wofford (whom we beat) on 11-28.
  • Bama lost to Iona 72-68 on 11-25.
  • Mizzou lost to Kansas City 80-66 on 11-15.  Their other losses have been to Wichita St. and FSU.
  • Ole Miss lost to Marquette 78-72 on 11-18 and 60-50 to Boise State on 11-21.
  • Vandy lost to VCU 48-37 on 11-17, but has not played anyone at their level other than that.  I remember VCU making the NCAAT last year only to be forced out due to Covid.

We just need to stay focus in December.

Its hard to compare teams until they play each other.
That's true, but Cuonzo Martin and Tom Crean just might be gone after this season.  Despite Crean's success at Indiana, he can't seem to find the handle at UGA.

Maybe Stackhouse, too, if Vandy tanks in conference play again this year.  Bryce Drew did an outstanding job at Valpo, but couldn't find the wins at Vandy, either.

Vandy lost 84-72 to SMU and Mizzou lost 66-45 to Liberty.

Everyone else above us won their games or stayed the same.  It's final exam time, so some teams haven't played and we are now off until 12-12 for our own finals.

We moved up one position in the pre-conference standings.

The #20 Gators lost 70-68 to Maryland yesterday.

On Saturday, #10 UK was upset 66-62 by Notre Dame and TAMU lost 68-64 to TCU.

Then the 7-win teams are sorted alphabetically, so we moved up a good bit.  LOL

Sure, no SEC teams have played each other yet, but it's been a while since we looked this good in the pre-conference part of the season.

That win over D1P5 FSU was better than some SEC teams did this weekend against similar opponents.

@kingofnerf, I would not put the game vs. the Taters in the "W" column yet.  At first glance, they seem like a team we can handle easily.  HOWEVER... look at their stats and who is doing what, and I think they present the Gamecocks with some difficulties.  For example:

1.) PJ Hall is their leading scorer and 2nd leading rebounder.  He's a guy that Frank Martin & co. are intimately familiar with (as we heavily recruited him), but... His numbers are gaudy compared to anything the Gamecocks are currently putting up.  A quick comparison with our leading scorer (Jermaine Cousinard) - Cousinard has 12.1 PPG/Hall has 14.7.  Hall compared to our leading rebounder (Wildens Leveque) - Leveque has 59 total (6.6 avg)/Hall 62 total (6.2 avg).  So PJ Hall alone is as productive as either of our two leaders in those categories.  He's an amazing ball handler and scorer given that the kid is 6'10", AND he shoots it well from behind the arc and hits better than 3/4 of his FT attempts.  He's going to be a handful for our guys, and a mismatch in a lot of ways for anyone except perhaps Leveque.  Stay out of foul trouble with him, because he's going to make you pay if you don't.

2.) Clemson features 5 guys averaging double figures.  Now some of that is stat padding, due to the schedule they have played so far (Bryant University, Temple University, Charleston Southern), but regardless, they have some capable scorers.  Where they are MOST dangerous vs. USC is behind the arc - an area where we still need to tighten up defensively.  4 of their 5 leading scorers have taken more than 30 shots from behind the arc, and of those ALL of them are hitting at least 32% (so almost 1 in 3 shots are falling for each of them).  When you consider that at least Honor and Dawes will take 5+ shots from 3 point land/game, and then they are hitting 44% and 48% respectively, we're giving up a LOT of points automatically from behind the arc to Clemson.  Unless Stevenson and Reece both match them shot for shot, we will be in trouble just by law of averages.

3.) Finally, and most importantly, you mention the Tiggers vs. Drake.  I don't know if you've watched any games that Drake has played in, but they have been competitive vs. Alabama (an 80-71 Loss), have a win over a very good Richmond (73-70 Win), and a 57-54 loss vs quite the good "Mean Green" North Texas team.  Drake, despite record and appearance is a pretty darned good team.  A team that I would put in a category above a UAB or a Rider at this moment (granted, that's my personal opinion).  And Drake is a relatively small team, getting most of their scoring from guys who are in the neighborhood of 6'5".  Think about that when you look at their matchups vs. Clemson.  I don't know that this bodes well for the 'Cocks overall.

All I want to point to at this point is that Clemson is not going to be a pushover team for the 'Cocks, and their record thus far does not show what the potential for them actually is.  Brad Brownell is an excellent coach, and has been a coach who has had our number over the last series of contests with the Taters.  (2016 - 62-60 Loss, 2017 - 64-48 Loss, 2018 - 78-68 Loss, 2019 - 67-54 Win, 2020 - DNP (Covid)).  In those years 2016-2021, they have not failed to make either the NIT or NCAA Tournament.

Do I think the 'Cocks have the superior team?  Yes.  Do I think the 'Cocks match up well vs. the Tiggers?  No, I do not.

This one will get interesting really quick.
