Several defensive ends among Gamecocks’ top 2019 targets

Feb. 26, 2018

The 2019 South Carolina recruiting class, Will Muschamp’s fourth group with the Gamecocks, currently includes six commitments, including two who are committed to play defense.

Let's takes a look at the defensive ends who could eventually join them in the Gamecocks’ 2019 haul. Included in this feature are prospects for the ‘Buck’ position, which is a hybrid of the defensive end and outside linebacker positions.

  • Current South Carolina Bucks and defensive ends
  • Redshirt junior Daniel Fennell (Buck)
  • Redshirt junior Shameik Blackshear
  • Junior D.J. Wonnum (Buck)
  • Redshirt sophomore Griffin Gentry
  • Sophomore Brad Johnson (Buck)
  • Freshman Tyreek Johnson
  • Freshman Kingsley Enagbare
Ideally, the 2018 South Carolina recruiting class would have included one more defensive end, to go along with Johnson and Enagbare, but the Gamecocks missed out on a handful of highly-recruited prospects.

With that spot remaining and the potential for attrition over the next 10 months, multiple defensive ends and ‘Bucks’ are expected to be signed in the 2019 class. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see a combined total of three or four players at that position. Of course, two are already committed.

Four-star defensive tackle signee Rick Sandidge could see time at the position, as well as 3-star offensive tackle Jesus Gibbs, who signed as a defensive lineman. But we’ll classify them as tackles in this series.
