Coach Beamer sounds off on Rattler's snub

The Allstate Sugar Bowl announced its preseason watch list of the nation’s 30 best quarterbacks on Monday, and South Carolina signal-caller Spencer Rattler wasn’t included. HC Shane Beamer, who hadn’t seen the Manning Award Watch List before his Tuesday press conference, had some thoughts on Rattler being excluded. “I’d say if somebody thinks that he’s not one of the 30 best quarterbacks in the country, they’ve lost their minds, in my opinion,” Beamer said in a lighthearted tone. “But that’s just me.”

Rattler was included on the 2021 Manning Award Watch List. “I don’t think the guy’s gotten worse as a quarterback since last year,” he continued.

Rattler completed 70.1% of his passes for 4,595 yards, 40 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions over three seasons at Oklahoma. He finished his time in Norman with a quarterback rating of 166 in that span. Six Southeastern Conference quarterbacks were listed on the Manning list including Georgia’s Stetson Bennett, Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker, Arkansas’ KJ Jefferson, Kentucky’s Will Levis, Mississippi State’s Will Rogers, and Alabama’s Bryce Young. Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson McCall and Charlotte’s Chris Reynolds who South Carolina will face on Sept. 24 in Columbia were also on the list.

Rattler is expected to be South Carolina’s starting quarterback when USC opens the season on Sept. 3 against Georgia State.

Beamer to recruits "come on down"

“So, recruits, you want to come see a college football game next Saturday night?” Beamer said. “Columbia, South Carolina is a fantastic place to be on a Saturday night. Really looking forward to seeing a lot of you guys in Columbia when we kick things off next Saturday.”

Shane Beamer and the South Carolina Gamecocks are planning to start the 2022 season with a bang. They’ll host Georgia State on Saturday, Sept. 3. That’s not necessarily a marquee game, but Beamer noted on Tuesday that it does provide a recruiting advantage for the Gamecocks.

Beamer pointed out that a lot of the teams South Carolina directly recruits against in the region, including Georgia, Clemson, Tennessee, and North Carolina, don’t have home games on Saturday night, thus ensuring regional recruits can head to Williams-Brice Stadium.

Beamer and Stoops (Beamer clears the air with latest comments)

Shane Beamer and Mark Stoops have had a bit of a skirmish in recent days following Stoops’ comments from SEC Media Days about building climate versus culture, and a reference to “stupid sunglasses” when Beamer was part of a viral video wearing sunglasses.

Beamer before a crowd over the weekend doubled down on how the culture and climate is “hot” at South Carolina.

“I appreciate Coach Stoops saying it wasn’t directed at me. … I can’t imagine he would’ve gotten out of his lane to direct a shot at me,” Beamer said on Tuesday, referring to other comments Stoops’ made about John Calipari.

Beamer said 2 or 3 of the Kentucky assistants came up to him before their game last year and complimented him about the Gamecocks’ culture.

“It is what it is, he’s got his program to worry about, I’ve got mine to worry about,” Beamer said. “My respect for him is still high, and that program as well.

All-American Jaylan Foster is back at South Carolina in a support role

Foster, who earned All-American honors last fall after starting his career with the Gamecocks as a walk-on, is back with the program in an official capacity, head coach Shane Beamer said. Beamer noted they haven’t settled on a title for Foster and that, under NCAA rules, he’s not technically coaching, but he is involved as a staff member.

“He’s involved with us and around the program and is an asset for sure for all the obvious reasons,” Beamer said. “He’s great with those young defensive backs and all the guys.” The Duncan product started his career at Gardner-Webb before transferring to South Carolina. Foster spent the bulk of his time at USC working on special teams and in a reserve role before breaking out last fall.

Others added to the staff

South Carolina has added a handful of former players to the coaching staff in recent months. Ex-Gamecocks defensive back Jaylin Dickerson medically retired from football in March before becoming a student assistant. Former South Pointe head coach and USC standout DeVonte Holloman were also officially added to the staff as an analyst on March 14.

Gamecock Chad Terrell out for the season after suffering another knee injury his 3rd of his career here at South Carolina

Gamecocks are down one skill position player before the season begins. Wide receiver/tight end Chad Terrell is out for the season with a torn ACL, head coach Shane Beamer told reporters on Tuesday. “Really, really hate it for that young man,” Beamer said.

Terrell has been slowed by injuries for much of his career in Columbia. The Georgia product tore the ACL in his left knee in 2018 and his right knee in 2020. Despite that, Terrell appeared in 27 contests over his five-plus years at South Carolina, while working at both tight end and receiver. He has seven career receptions for 76 yards.
