Shane Beamer Sunday night conference call quotes with audio

Sept. 12, 2021

This Sunday night Beamer was still enjoying the benefits that come with victory, albeit not a pretty one. The Gamecocks practiced lightly Sunday night, and Beamer said quarterback Luke Doty was able to go harder than he did a week ago. He is expecting him to be 100% for this Saturday night but said he won’t run him out there if he isn’t. This week Doty will compete with Zeb Noland for the starting job, with a starter not likely to be named until gametime.

  • Beamer:  Said he'll never apologize for a win, regardless of how they played, though the team got better as the game went on, the last 17 minutes thought the team played well, loved how they kept the ball for the final 4:54 to win.
  • Beamer: The pick 6 in the 2nd quarter was a big turn in-game, ECU was moving perhaps towards a touchdown, instead it becomes a one-score game
  • Beamer:  Lots to clean up in all three parts of the game, no new injury issues from the game, Doty did more in practice today than a week ago, expects him to be 100% this week, Sandidge is getting better but is out this week.
  • Beamer: Need to be better in the running game from the start, ECU brought a lot of pressure, a lot of movement up front, didn't handle it well.
  • Beamer:  Would have been comfortable with any of the backs on the last series, they went with McDowell who had had a big kickoff return in the fourth quarter, he brings a lot of energy to the position.
  • Beamer:  Kirby Smart doesn't allow anyone in his building to get complacent after wins, and they are really good.
  • Beamer:  Not going to put Doty out there if he's not 100%, see how practice goes this week, competition will be going on at the position this week if Doty is able to go and push Noland.
  • Beamer:  Says Will Muschamp being at Georgia now won't have much impact on the game from his having insight on schemes as such, said it's not a big deal, he'll know the players.  Said he's a great coach.  It will all come down to the player.
  • Beamer:  Josh Vann has been awesome, a great leader, has done a lot of good things for them, very motivated and driven, proud of how he has handled his business on and off the field.
  • Beamer: Second half at ECU proved to him he has a bunch of fighters and competitors on the team, guys never flinched, has a defense playing well, special teams making game-changing plays, offense getting better.
  • Beamer:  Noland early on missed some throws and some protections, but he made some great throws as the game went on, he got better as the game went on.
  • Beamer:  Stetson Bennett is a good quarterback and has started for Georgia in the past, they'll prepare whether it's Bennett or Daniels starting.

^^THIS.

Noland did his job and made the completions to Vann and Joyner, but it's their responsibility to hang onto the ball after the completion, not his.

Take away the two turnovers and it's us leading 14-7 at halftime instead of ECU.

Take away the trick play brain fart and that would have made it 14-0 our way at the half and you're probably looking at a 24-10 or 28-10 victory for us.

We stopped the bleeding and got the win anyway.

I doubt will see Doty, either, against UGA.  It would be easier for him to shake off the rust if other parts of the team were playing better, too, if we're not likely to get the win against UGA.

Noland has more experience at the college level than Doty and that's what will keep the guys in the huddle calm against UGA.

We have four great running backs who will make it happen if the OL can do it's job and create the run gaps.

Keep pluggin'.

Got the same feeling about Doty playing as well. if he was only 75% vs ECU, doubt he be 100% Saturday vs the Dawgs.

It also seems to me like putting a more mobile QB would prevent the staff from seeing and correcting issues with the OL right now.

I think Shane and his staff would be more likely to leave Noland as the starter and work on the OL to achieve a more balanced offense.

Otherwise it's going to be more of the same crap on offense we have seen the past few seasons.

Doty has to play the whole game to really be effective and he will need good blocking for that to happen.

Otherwise he will be running for his life and hoping for the best.

It's not just about speed.  Look at what Jalen Hurts (a former Beamer QB himself) and Jameis Winston did yesterday.  Run when you have to, but stay in the pocket most of the time with good blocking.

I don't think Doty plays this week.  Why risk him getting hurt against UGA.  I mean, I am cheering for a win, but most likely we lose easily to UGA.  Their D is awesome and I see no reason to risk Doty getting more hurt against that D.

Good points Nerf.  OL has to get better.  Not sure they could protect Doty.  If we can't run much, we are in for a long game Saturday.  WR do have to secure the ball after the catch.

Doty could have kept ECU honest by running on those pass plays where Noland seemed to be unsure, but then again, so could have Noland.

Maybe he learns a little bit from that and puts it to good use against UGA.

Tommy Suggs, Jeff Grantz, Allen Mitchell, and Mike Hold all beat teams with their legs when they needed to.
