Fans select South Carolina's Connor Shaw
Nearly 20,000 votes have been cast in our SportsNation poll from last week, and the fans have tabbed South Carolina's Connor Shaw as their SEC quarterback of choice.
The question that was posed last week in the SEC blog was simply this: Who would you take at quarterback right now in the SEC?
Shaw collected 31 percent of the vote to beat out Alabama's AJ McCarron and Georgia's Aaron Murray, who tied with 26 percent each. The other two choices were Florida's Jeff Driskel (10 percent) and Arkansas' Tyler Wilson (7 percent).
As I stated last week, fans have all sorts of different criteria they use in evaluating quarterbacks.
My choice was McCarron, who's now gone 206 pass attempts without throwing an interception dating back to last season. McCarron has passed for 999 yards and 12 touchdowns this season.
When making my choice, I went back and forth between McCarron and Murray, who leads the SEC in passing efficiency through five weeks. Murray has passed for 1,378 yards, 12 touchdowns and three interceptions this season.
And, yes, Shaw entered my mind, especially after being in Columbia, S.C., two weeks ago to see him complete 20 straight passes in the 31-10 win over Missouri. I ended up having Shaw third on my list. In his past two games, he's 35-of-39 for 397 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. He's also rushed for 117 yards in those two games and has done so despite a hairline fracture in his right shoulder.
We get to see Murray and Shaw go head-to-head this weekend when No. 5 Georgia travels to No. 6 South Carolina, so maybe the pecking order will change.
Either way, it's been a good year for quarterbacks in the SEC, and we'll conduct another poll later in the season when we have more data.
Until then, the fans have spoken.
Shaw sits at the head of the SEC's quarterback class.
