Reserve safety Sheldon Royster has not been at practice the last couple of days and is considering a transfer.

Royster is currently third-team free safety behind D.J. Swearinger and Jared Shaw. Royster has a medical issue, diabetes, which has kept him off the practice field off and on throughout his career at Souhh Carolina.

USC spokesman Steve Fink confirmed Saturday night redshirt freshman Sheldon Royster is “considering” transferring. The BigSpur.com reported earlier Saturday that Royster had not been at practice recently and was considering a transfer.

Royster was a heavily recruited prospect from New Jersey when he signed with the Gamecocks. He has battled health issues at USC, most notably diabetes, and has not been able to crack the two deep on the depth chart. He is no longer listed on the 2012 roster on the team website.

Royster’s departure would be another blow to the Gamecocks’ defensive depth. USC will be without cornerback Akeem Auguste, safety Sharrod Golightly, cornerback Rico McWilliams, linebacker Marcquis Roberts, cornerback Cadarious Sanders and defensive tackle JT Surratt for the opening game Thursday at Vanderbilt.

Auguste, McWilliams and Roberts are injured, Golightly and Surratt are suspended, and Sanders has transfered.

Yeah, it’s bad for the team, but Sheldon’s health comes first. I wish him well and hope he can get his diabetes under control.
