Significant changes on the way for top targets?

September 11, 2017

The news pales in comparison to what’s actually happened with Hurricane Irma, but 4-star linebacker Channing Tindall’s decision to postpone his plans to commit this month is pretty significant.

South Carolina, the long-time favorite, will have to fend off a handful of suitors including Auburn, Georgia, Florida and Florida State. At this point, it’s uncertain if South Carolina even remains the favorite behind closed doors.

The scuttlebutt out of northeast Columbia is that Auburn might be the biggest threat.

Travis Williams, the Tigers linebackers coach, graduated from Spring Valley before he moved down to The Plains. Williams stopped by the high school on Thursday night to see Tindall play. Georgia inside linebackers coach Glenn Schumann was there, too, six days after Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp and South Carolina linebackers coach Coleman Hutzler.

Tindall postponed his decision because he didn’t feel the timing was right, given the uncertainty of the storm.

But it’s also clear that he’s conflicted with his decision.

South Carolina is expected to host Tindall this weekend for the Kentucky game, when Williams-Brice Stadium opens for business in 2017.

Fellow 4-star linebacker Dax Hollifield from Shelby, N.C., might have to adjust some plans, too. Hollifield scheduled his first official visit for Florida State this weekend for the Miami game, but the game has been postponed until October.

Wins matter, especially at South Carolina

For much of the last year, this space has devoted many words about the importance of showing signs of progress on the field in 2017.

Muschamp was asked about the importance of winning Year 2, as it relates to recruiting success.

“There’s no doubt that people want to see results. They want to see you making progress,” he said. “Certainly, I think in our first two games, they see a tremendous amount of progress from Year 1 to Year 2 and Week 1 to Week 2 and they want to continue to see it.

“The big thing that people take shots on us about is history and tradition and we need to show that we’re a team that’s going to be winning some ball games.”
