Sir Big Spur controversy ramps up

August 02, 2022

The comb or no comb. Now the way the bird looks has come into question as well. What is called the comb over, there is a red “crest” on top of the bird’s head and under its beak. According to The Post and Courier, it’s used as an “air conditioner” and cools the rooster down. (READ)

I'm usually one for tradition, but I have to draw the line at harming the animal. It seems to me that cutting the comb does just that unless there's something I'm missing here.
As for the name, just change it and be done with it if the old owners have a problem.

Same.

Focusing on superficial stuff like this instead of actually winning football games has been one of our problems in recent years.

Clemson doesn't take us seriously anymore, no matter how the bird looks on game days.

Just let the rooster be himself on game days, dang it. LOL

I think we lost any claim to tradition adherence when we sh*t the bed over the USC trademark lawsuit. No cosmetic surgery for the Rooster, why needlessly stress an animal?

Removing the comb is done in chicken fighting. Also, the things on the logo/graphics and the statue that folks call spurs are really referred to as gaffs. Spurs grow naturally, gaffs are blades added again for fighting with a band or leather strap around the leg. I'm for tradition like you but those that argue against these aspecsts have a case. For the actual live "Sir Big Spur", keep the name, leave the comb on his head as nature intends, like it is on our logos, graphics, statues, Cocky and so on.
