Sizing up South Carolina's win over Charleston Southern

Sept. 07, 2019

Ryan Hilinski looked the part in his first start at quarterback for the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Hilinski, who was starting in place Jake Bentley, completed his first 12 throws during the 72-10 win over Charleston Southern on Saturday afternoon at Williams-Brice Stadium. The freshman from Orange, Calif. connected on several short, quick-hitting passes. And he looked comfortable reading the Buccaneers defense and moving through his progressions, to find an open receiver. (VIEW ARTICLE) FREE 247SPORTS

It's hard to size up this victory.  On the one hand, it was a lot of fun to watch...desperately needed after the game last week.  On the other hand, it was against a bad FCS team (they lost by 30+ to Furman last week).  I'm hoping last week's performance was an aberration, and we find out for sure next week that we have a good team.

What stands out the most to me was we were up-tempo with our offense the whole game.

Before today, it was up-tempo for the first couple of possessions, and then it's look to the sidelines for the signals and then get the play off in the nick of time.

Johnny Manziel beat Bama with up-tempo and it drove Saban nuts because it rushed Bama's defense.

We have a chance to overcome bad match-ups with tempo and get wins if we can keep it up.

Yes!  To me, the best part of the whole day was that we never took our foot off the gas.

I was still a little disappointed with our D. They should have been able to get way more than 1 sack. The secondary was great. Those INTs were great, but not enough heat on that QB.

At least they tackled better. Hope they do just as good next week.

The secondary will definitely be tested next week with the the Tua to Jeudy connection.

True, one sack was miniscule but the int's were because of the pressure from the front. I'm not saying that "we're there" yet... Not at all. But I was pretty pleased in all phases of the game.
