NOTES FIRST WEEK OF PRACTICE

- Kenny Miles gotten after it in the first week of practice and looks to be in the best shape seens he has been at USC. Sands said last week that when Miles ran his 40-yard dash this winter that it was almost .2 seconds faster than his previous best time. There's no doubt that Miles is going to face a loaded depth chart ahead of him in the fall, but all signs seem to point to him being back at this point.

- Spurrier had this to say about Coach Joe Robinson " he is ateacher" of special teams. Robinson seemed both comfortable and extremely happy to be back in the SEC when he met with reporters last week. Even just listening to Robinson in that setting he has a sort of calming way of talking and explaining a situation. "Coach (Spurrier) is 100 percent behind making our special teams the best in the conference. We'll use anybody and everybody (including starters). And the players, it's amazing how receptive they've been -- I really enjoy their attitude, their focus, every day."

-New secondary coach Grady Brown had this to say about Hampton he was one of the most talented players he's been around in his 13 years coaching.

- Since Stephon Gilmore's decision to forgo his final year of eligibility, the pressure to be this season's top cornerback almost immediately shifted to the shoulders of Victor Hampton. Hampton has had a very strong start to the spring and just needs to continue his strong play on the field while continuing to handle his business off the field

- Spurrier and G.A. Mangus want Connor Shaw to work on this spring is using his feet to slide in the pocket and buy time to create downfield opportunities in the passing game. Mangus certainly understands, and is a fan of dual threat quarterbacks, so he doesn't want to keep Shaw from using his wheels to create plays. But they do want him to do continue working on walking that fine line of deciding when to take off running and when to hang in there.

-Mangus and one of the graduate assistants put together a tape of Saints QB Drew Brees and his ability to move his feet in the pocket to create time and throwing lanes. Brees if about the same size as Shaw and is one of the NFL's best at doing exactly what they want Shaw to improve on. Fittingly, Brees is also Shaw's favorite NFL quarterback.
