The first thing that stands out about new South Carolina commitment Michael Bowman (Havelock, N.C./Havelock) is his physicality and toughness. He's a thick kid who played running back for much of the early part of his career and because of that is used to taking hits and bouncing off would-be tacklers. That shows in his film as he is rarely dragged down by the first defender and runs with an attitude that you don't usually see from wide receivers. Bowman actually may see some time at running back this season.

Bowman doesn't have excellent straight line speed but he does have solid football speed and doesn't get run down from behind. He's an incredibly serious kid, who very rarely smiles and is the type who would rather keep to himself, put his head down and go to work rather than draw attention to himself -- he doesn't have the prima donna attitude that is common with wide receivers.

Bowman has very sticky hands, can catch the football in traffic and was actually very impressive going up over defenders and catching the football when I saw him at the Black Magic camp this summer. Havelock coach Jim Bob Bryant said he's the strongest receiver he's ever coached and is one of the hardest worker on his team. He's going to be working more on his straight-line speed and consistency blocking this season.

Steve Spurrier Jr. offered Bowman way back in August of 2012 (his first major offer) and he's been a priority for the Gamecocks ever since. While N.C. State was the Gamecocks' biggest competition, this has been a foregone conclusion for some time that Bowman was going to be a Gamecock as he's pretty much had his mind made up for a while. N.C. State didn't handle rejection from Derrell Scott very well and that certainly didn't help them make any kind of final push either. Bowman wanted to get the process finished and did so with a very low-key press conference this morning.

Overall, solid pickup for the Gamecocks and defensive line coach Deke Adams who continues to do a strong job on the recruiting trail.
