South Carolina’s home-run signees in the 2017 class: 5 stand above the rest

Feb. 02, 2017

South Carolina had a major final day of the 2017 recruiting cycle, finishing with five commitments on Wednesday to round out a Top 25 class with 24 total commitments.

But a few stood above the rest in making a big splash in the total picture of the class, and three of those came on signing day:

Jamyest Williams, CB

There’s little doubt that without Williams (Loganville, Ga.) in this class, there would be a different public perception around the 2017 South Carolina class. But Williams stuck with his commitment, giving the Gamecocks one of the most dynamic players in the nation and an instant impact player in the secondary. How much better does it look that the Gamecocks were able to keep a highly-recruited and immensely-talented player in the fold?

Javon Kinlaw, DE

South Carolina struggled up front against the run last season, and Kinlaw is a perfect answer for the Gamecocks on the interior of the defensive line. The 6-foot-6, 305-pound recruit from Jones County (Miss.) Junior College recommitted to South Carolina on signing day, a key player to have in the class after he first committed in Dec. 2015.

Brad Johnson, DE

The in-state defensive end has major skills as a pass rusher, which is an area the Gamecocks have to improve. Darius English was the lone defensive end to get consistent pressure in the backfield in 2016, so the addition of Johnson, a standout from Pendleton (S.C.), is welcome to what wound up being a strong defensive line class.

OrTre Smith, WR

For the second straight season, South Carolina landed a big-time talent with a big frame at wide receiver. The Mount Pleasant (S.C.) Wando wide receiver already is on campus as an early enrollee, looking to follow in Bryan Edwards’ footsteps to have a big freshman season for the Gamecocks.

M.J. Webb, DE

Webb had offers from across the SEC but picked South Carolina as his destination. The Morgan County (Ga.) Madison defensive lineman who can play both inside and outside on the defensive line enrolled early and took part in a week’s worth of bowl practices after he graduated from high school.
