South Carolina 2018 football mock signing class 3.0 — offense stacked at skill positions
October 16, 2017
The South Carolina football team’s 2018 recruiting class has commitments from 12 prospects that profile to play on offense.
With three full months left before National Signing Day, the Gamecocks have an offensive class that’s almost completely full. Only a handful of prospects remain, including 4-star tackle Dylan Wonnum (Tucker, Ga.) and 3-star guard Jovaughn Gwyn (Charlotte, N.C.).
The strength of South Carolina’s 2018 offensive class is at the skill positions: quarterback, running back and wide receiver. Because there are so many tight ends on the current roster, the position is likely to go without a signee in the 2018 class.
Below is SEC Country’s take for October on what the 2018 South Carolina signing class could look like on the first Wednesday in February.
Quarterback (1)
4-star Dakereon Joyner (North Charleston, S.C.)
While it’s possible that South Carolina could bring on a second 2018 quarterback, the Gamecocks offensive staff has to be pleased with the guy they already have committed.
Joyner, a finalist for the state’s Mr. Football award, is leading Fort Dorchester High School on an impressive run, which could end with another trip to Williams-Brice Stadium for a state title game.
Running back (2)
3-star Deshaun Fenwick (Bradenton, Fla.), 3-star Lavonte Valentine (Melbourne, Fla.)
Both running backs were on campus as official visitors earlier this season. Both guys, thunder and lightning, are on track to enroll at South Carolina in January.
The Gamecocks are done at the position for 2018.
Wide receiver (4)
4-star Josh Vann (Tucker, Ga.), 3-star Tyquan Johnson (Sylvania, Ga.), 3-star Ronnie Jamison (Irmo, S.C.), 3-star Darius Rush (Kingstree, S.C.)
Vann, the headliner of the group, took an official visit to Kansas State earlier this season, but he’s since taken two unofficials to South Carolina. He’s not planning to visit any other schools before signing with the Gamecocks.
As long as there are no de-commitments from the group, these are the four wide receivers South Carolina will add in 2018.
Offensive line (6)
3-star Maxwell Iyama (Murfreesboro, Tenn.), 3-star Hank Manos (Chapin, S.C.), 3-star Wyatt Campbell (Lugoff, S.C.), 3-star Jesus Gibbs (Dumfries, Va.), 3-star LaMarius Benson (Covington, Ga.), 4-star Dylan Wonnum (Tucker, Ga.)
Wonnum has been to South Carolina for two games this season, and it appears the Gamecocks have regained their grasp as the team to beat. Auburn once held that distinction, but the lead has since dissipated.
Iyama, Manos and Campbell all have taken multiple visits to Columbia this season.
