South Carolina basketball: Recap, box score from SEC home opener versus Texas A&M

Jan. 07, 2016

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The dynamic duo of Sindarius Thornwell and P.J. Dozier struggled for much of the afternoon against Texas A&M, but another pair of guards helped lead South Carolina to a 79-68 win on Saturday.

Duane Notice and Rakym Felder each scored 19, as they combined to shoot 7 of 12 from behind the 3-point line.

Thornwell, who finished with 16 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals, struggled shooting, made 6 of 16 shots from the field.

The win, South Carolina’s second in SEC play, improves their overall record to 12-3 (2-0 SEC).

Player of the game

Felder provided a much-needed first half spark, ending a stretch during which the Gamecocks shot 3 of 15 to start the game. The freshman made all three of his 3-pointers and missed just two shots all afternoon. He also chipped in with 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.

Turning point

Trailing by two at halftime, South Carolina came out of the gates roaring, opening the second half with a 7-0 run. The Gamecocks pushed their lead up to eight before the Aggies went up 59-58 with 7:00 to play.

South Carolina regained the lead when Thornwell scored for the first time since getting the team’s first five points of the afternoon. The Gamecocks then used 12-2 run to help push the lead to as many as 11 points.

What’s next for South Carolina basketball

South Carolina is back in action on Wednesday night with a trip to Knoxville to play Tennessee.

I see McKie had 11 minutes in the game.

I remember watching his dad in awe.

Never thought about it.  Hmmm...

I enjoyed the three guard lineup that Fogler had.  We kicked it with that bunch.

If Notice would hit the shots he's supposed to, he would be the new Larry Davis.

And PJ is like Melvin Watson.

There you go.
