South Carolina basketball kicks off Costa Rica trip with win

August 08, 2016

South Carolina got its Costa Rica trip off to a good start Sunday thanks to its seniors.

The Gamecocks downed the Costa Rican national team 73-53 in the first game of its international trip, which will feature one more game then a practice with the Costa Rica men’s national team.

Senior guard Justin McKie led the way with 17 points, while another Duane Notice, another senior guard, had 16, according to stats provided by South Carolina.

“I thought after the first quarter we were able to shake off a few jitters and travel, and settle in and defend,” associate head coach Matt Figger said in a statement. “We shot the ball pretty well and we played without fouling. We mixed and matched guys together to see how we would handle playing different spots. For the most part it was pleasing.

“We were able to run and score in transition and that gave us a comfortable lead. We fatigued in the second half, which was expected. I thought we were able to make the game faster by pressing and then controlled the game by using our zone.”

Senior guard Sindarious Thornwell had nine rebounds and four assists as the trio of seniors all showed up in the first game. The second game will take place on Monday afternoon.

Before Sunday’s game, the Gamecocks hosted a youth clinic in the community of San Ramon. On Monday, a clinic will take place for the Special Olympics prior to the game.
