South Carolina bound? Mike Bobo's former Colorado State QB enters NCAA transfer portal

Dec. 19, 2019

QB Collin Hill just announced he is leaving Colorado State. Why is that news to Gamecock Nation? He knows Mike Bobo’s offense better than any player in Columbia at the moment. The former Ram quarterback is also a graduate, meaning he will be eligible to play immediately next season.

What you need to know stats wise:

In three years on the field at Colorado State, Hill completed 60.7 percent of his passes with 3,323 yards with 23 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Hill was named a team captain for the 2018 season but later suffered an ACL injury.

In two different games, Hill has managed to throw four touchdown passes in a game. Against Western Illinois, Hill once threw for 351 yards in the first half of a game.

Before signing with Colorado State, Hill played his high school football at Dorman High School in Moore, South Carolina. Hill holds the Dorman school-records for career touchdown passes, completion percentage and passing yards in a season and career.

He really likes Bobo. From what I know very good chance he will be wearing the Garnet and Black his final year.

If anything, this should allow Joyner to focus on playing WR. I feared that he would have to waste a year as the backup QB but if we have another option then we wouldn't have to worry about having him as the alternate. I hope he comes but do you guys think he has a chance of starting over Hilinski? It seems like a long shot to me unless his knowledge of the system outweighs Hilinski's talent.

At the moment our QB depth is shaky behind Hilinski.  Two part time QBs and a true freshman. Would this kid transfer out as a starter at CSU to come be #2?  What would it do to the QB room?  I’m afraid Joyner would be gone and maybe Hilinski too if he got beat out.  That would leave us with Luke Doty after next year and a whole lot of scrambling for QBs.  I’d be really careful here if I was Bobo.

Hilinski was expecting to redshift last season and Hill is a grad transfer with a year to play. If he starts, then Hilinski will probably redshirt this year and be back on schedule to battle Doty for the starting position when Hill graduates. I don't see a transfer issue occuring from this situation if it does happen.

Big thing for me, I hope Bobo is going back to a "SEC" scheme and not what he had at CSU.

As we saw, what he had there did not even work against those teams that are nothing like SEC teams. And to be honest, even the same thing he did at UGA probably won't be so effective in the SEC any more. No matter which way he decides to lead our team, I hope it works. If that QB from right here in SC wants to come home and he can beat Hilinski, then let him come on. Hilinski and Doty can both redshirt and DAK can still be #2.

Looking at our recruits and the couple possibilities still out there, our D will be getting the ball back to the QB real quick. Before we talked about how wore out our D got. Next year it might be our O getting wore out, lol.

Especially since it's one year. Slightly concerned about Joyner though.

IMO a RS is irrelevant for Ryan at this point. Experience is not an issue....it's can his new QB coach help him elevate his game? He's either "that guy" or he's not. Sitting on the bench doesn't make a difference.

The future is Doty....if his OC can adapt his offense to a dual threat. It should be obvious. The QB competition should be between Doty and Hilinski.

And if Colin Hill is not SEC calibre, he needs to go elsewhere if he wants to play.

I doubt that there is any starting graduate player that would enter the portal and transfer to a team to be a #2.  The only reason to transfer to a team is if you believe you will have a legitimate opportunity to compete for the starting job, and the confidence in yourself that you can win it.

If he comes here, he will have been assured he will have the opportunity to start.

I just dont see us burning a scholly on him. I would think the only way he ends up in Cocklumbia is as a walk on.

It could be a "crutch" for Bobo's first year.  Bobo knows what the quarterback can and can't do.  The kid knows Bobo's offense.  I've got no problem with an offer, if Bobo thinks he might help.

I talked to a guy I work with that is a CSU alum. He said Hill was 100% Bobo. Only went to CSU because of Bobo. That's why it would not surprise me to see Bobo get him an offer. Like we said, he knows Bobo and what Bobo expects.

I just hope Bobo don't try exactly what they did at CSU, because it did not work, but maybe that is just because he did not have the players he needed. With our RB's and our O line, it may be a great scheme and this QB would know it inside and out already. Bobo was able to lure a QB from SC all the way to CSU but he might not of had many other really good players. Going to be quite and off season waiting on the Spring game and hoping for huge changes next fall.

This does present some interesting scenarios. However, I worry that it might be a problem for Hilinski. He paid his dues this past year. I'm convinced he played hurt most of the season.  He deserves to be our starter. Also, I'd like to see more of Joyner at QB. I know many think he should make the switch to WR, but I'm hoping good coaching can help him develop his skills as a dual threat. Having said that I understand that his changing positions would get him on the field more often.

It will be interesting to see where Hill decides to go. He's from the Greenville SC area and if it's true he only went to CS because of Bobo It's not a reach to think he'll be a Gamecock. I'd like to know which schools in the Southeast recruited him back when he chose Colorado State.

Hill is coming here. I disagree about Hilinski deserving to be a starter. I don't think it has anything to with "paying dues". The qb with the best skills, performance and who gives us the best chance to win deserves the starting spot. As of now, it is unknown who that may be.

Can't imagine a grad transfer qb coming in to be the backup. They're bringing him in for a reason so I expect Hill will be the starter next year. The plan for Hilinski is the question mark. Does he redshirt? Is he #2? #3?

will be interesting to see what he can bring. Will be nice to have 2 experienced QBs on the roster that will push each other for playing time. Plus having an experienced back-up that can come into a game on moments without missing a beat is invaluable. We'll be better off for it. We haven't really had that since Garcia, Shaw, Dylan.

I guess Grit and Steel is right. Whoever wins the job in the Spring should be our starter. I just don't want to see Hilinski leave the program.

Has anyone figured out if Hill was highly recruited in the Southeast when he came out of high school? Also, is he a drop back or dual threat guy?
