South Carolina coach Will Muschamp locks on recruits with ‘competitive edge’

Midway through putting together his first recruiting class at South Carolina, Will Muschamp has a cut-and-dry picture of the No. 1 thing he wants in a recruit as he looks to build up the roster in Columbia.
“Competitive edge – guys that want to compete,” Muschamp said Monday during a stop on ESPN’s Car Wash.
The first-year South Carolina football coach said seeing someone who isn’t interesting in competing and more being well-situated for a spot will cause him to stop recruiting a player.
“Those guys that ask me about the depth chart the third time, I’m done,” Muschamp said. “I’m moving to the next guy. I want a guy that wants to compete.”
For a prime example, Muschamp mentioned former Florida cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III, who one of the most high-profile players he has recruited as the No. 3 player in the nation in the 2013 class per 247sports. When Hargreaves, who was a first-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, came out of Tampa (Fla.) Wharton, Muschamp said there was no questions coming about the depth chart instead just questions about having an opportunity to compete.
“(He) was a guy that we had two corners coming back on a really good defense at Florida,” Muschamp said. “He never asked one time about the depth chart. He said, ‘Coach, give me an opportunity to start.’ He started Game 1.”
Currently, the Gamecocks hold the nation’s No. 23 recruiting class, per the 247sports Composite Rankings. But regardless of what rankings say and what on-field skills are displayed, Muschamp and his staff will be looking
