On the road again
Less than 24 hours after losing to Clemson, Muschamp’s staff hit the ground running, just as he said it would.
Among the first prospects the Gamecocks coaches saw were their commitments: 4-star cornerback Jamyest Williams and 3-star offensive tackle Dennis Daley.
Defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson saw Williams, the No. 7-ranked cornerback in the country, for an in-home, outside of Atlanta.
Offensive line coach Shawn Elliott stopped by Daley’s place in Columbia, S.C. Daley is the No. 6-ranked offensive tackle among 2017 junior college prospects.

Wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon went south to Mount Pleasant, S.C., for an in-home visit with 4-star wide receiver commitment OrTre Smith, the No. 17-ranked wide receiver in the nation.
Muschamp and Robinson will be in Arizona on Monday to meet with 3-star junior cornerback Keisean Nixon. Nixon, who’s originally from outside of Los Angeles, took an official visit to Oregon State over the weekend.
On Tuesday, linebackers coach Coleman Hutzler is scheduled to head out to Kansas to check on 3-star linebacker commitment Eldridge Thompson. Thompson is ranked as the No. 3 JUCO outside linebacker.
Thompson, who’s finishing up at Coffeyville Community College, will be done with his junior college experience on Dec. 9. A day after he returns home to Memphis, Tenn., Muschamp will make his in-home visit.
Three-star offensive line commitment Summie Carlay will make the short trip down from Laurens, S.C., on Friday for his official visit.
Carlay, Smith and Thompson are scheduled to enroll at South Carolina in January. Daley, who’s currently at Georgia Military College, will enroll at South Carolina in the summer.
Road rules
It’s that time of the year to bone up on your recruiting nomenclature.
Sunday was the first day of the contact period, which runs through Jan. 28, 2017. According to the NCAA, a contact period allows coaches to have face-to-face contact with college-bound student-athletes or their parents. Coaches are also permitted to watch student-athletes compete and visit their high schools, and write or telephone student-athletes or their parents.
There are two pauses during the contact period. The first is a one-day quiet period on Dec. 11. During a quiet period, coaches are allowed to only have face-to-face contact with college-bound student-athletes or their parents on the college’s campus.
A coach may not watch student-athletes compete (unless a competition occurs on the college’s campus) or visit their high schools. Coaches may write or telephone college-bound student-athletes or their parents during this time.
Then, Dec. 12-Jan. 11 is a dead period, during which coaches are not allowed to have face-to-face contact with college-bound student-athletes or their parents, and may not watch student-athletes compete or visit their high schools. Coaches may write and telephone student-athletes or their parents during a dead period.
Recruiting roundup
A handful of the recruits who were in Clemson on Saturday night are taking a serious look at South Carolina. Among them were a trio of 2018 in-state prospects: Jordyn Adams, Dakereon Joyner and Xavier Thomas.
Adams, a wide receiver from Blythewood, and Joyner, a quarterback from Fort Dorchester High School, spoke with TheClemsonInsider afterward about the experience at Clemson.
“It was crazy last night. It was wild. Clemson’s defense played extremely well and on top of that Deshaun (Watson) and his receivers played lights out, including Wayne Gallman,” Joyner said. “Carolina struggled to throw the ball and their offensive line struggled.”
“I had a good time,” Adams said. “I love the atmosphere of the rivalry altogether and I loved how Clemson came out firing all around. I think it was a good win going into the conference championship.”
On Sunday, 2020 offensive lineman Jake Wray added an offer from Alabama. South Carolina offered the 6-foot-5, 280-pound prospect from Franklin, Tenn., earlier this month.
